Big changes in temple garments are reported, but the biggest are only allowed if you're in particular hot and humid areas. Porn shoulders may be okay in those areas, but not in other parts of the world.

Sleeveless Mormon temple garments, finally! Why now?

The whole artificiality of the differing changes and restrictions reminds me of the bit about piercings. Piercings are bad -- except for one in each ear on women -- which only served to point out how arbitrary the whole thing was.

This whole thing is an experiment in crazy thinking.

Here’s a few thoughts.

Hot climates, starting with Africa.
Isn’t it weird dark skinned African members have to be clothed in white? Seems an odd contrast.
Who decided what climates are considered hot?
How does reducing the shoulder length 2” become a sufficient cooling mechanism?
This ignores the many UTI complaints from women.
Members are now stating garments were never about modesty so change in length doesn’t matter.

This appears to be hitting the TBMs as hard as the Covid pandemic. Boomers have been complaining since the church went to the two piece garment set. Gen X has joined the Boomers in suggesting how slutty the new shoulder porn garments look. Millennials and Gen Z don’t care what others think. The new design is not as tantalizing as no garments at all. Church leaders will continue to attempt to win the hearts of Millennials and Gen Zers with temple, garment and temporary commandment changes until they realize most of them still don’t care what the church wants them to think or do…..And what of Gen Alpha? Not sure how this new generation will react to the changes as long as they can drink their espressos.

It's just the most recent example of an instance where church leaders insisted members make sacrifices to obey a rule only to have the carpet yanked out from under them, causing people to question the need for those sacrifices made in the past.

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for making changes that allow members to set aside unnecessary sacrifices. I'm just saying that people might want to consider the possibility of future carpet yanking when weighing whether or not they should make the sacrifices that leaders are currently asking them to make.

Who knows. maybe a year from now church leaders will move to where garments are only "required" in the temple. Wanna keep making that sacrifice to wear them next summer or do you want to get ahead of the curve and claim autonomy over how you approach religion?

A lot of post-mo females are reliving the intense body shaming we got as teens over "modesty" because of all this. I stopped wearing gs over a year ago. It's awesome. I should have done it sooner. I hate remembering all the crap we went through over modesty. The body shaming was constant and just so unhealthy. In the 90s, before all the "modest is hottest" stores, it was damn near impossible to find formal dresses with sleeves. And it didn't stop after Young Womens. All the leaders at BYUI were ruthless about what we wore.

This is a tough one. I hope the garment change is a sign of a healthier future, but damn the past just hurts sometimes.
