A driver who accidentally runs over and kills or injures a protester during a riot might not face criminal charges if the motorist was fleeing in fear for his or her life at the time, under the provisions of a state bill advanced Tuesday by Utah lawmakers.

The legislation — brought forward by state Rep. Jon Hawkins after a summer of national protests against police violence and systemic racism — would also make it a third-degree felony to obstruct traffic during a riot.

I am not in favor of legalizing vehicular homicide in Utah. Sounds like our Legislature is too hopped up on Trumpism to be thinking straight. Go fast and pray about this for a year. Discuss it in your Priesthood and Relief Society meetings till you come to your senses. Remember, you can no longer count on the courts to toss out crackpot Utah ideas.

How is fleeing for your life considered a homicide? Take all of the politics out of it. If you were surrounded on the road by gang of thugs who expressed the intent to kill you with their bats and knives, driving through them to get away is self-defense.
