And "windows" in both the top and bottom of the barrel - you know, for when he got tossed upside-down, gravity was somehow suspended, and he couldn't tell which way was up?

Oh man, I just got it. That's why my institute teacher apologist friend sent me that article! I sent him back an article about the Son of Town Hall, a raft made from junk that made the crossing with a lot more style back in the 90s.
