I'm sure TACO J has it's own internal council attorney's who work directly for the Corporation™. I'm not sure exactly what those attorneys would do, but I'm sure they exist. I'm also sure they wouldn't work for anyone else.
Kirton|McConkie is an "independent" law firm, and you can hire them to represent you at any time if you desire to pony up some big $$$. The fact that LD$-Inc. give Kirton|McConkie likely billions of dollars to defend the Holy Corporation™ from sexual abuse allegations (and cover up such allegations) is just that: A fact. I'm absolutely positive that there's never been any nepotism, or any other relationship like that between Kirton|McConkie and the Holy Corporation™.
(
There may be a tiny bit of sarcasm in the previous paragraph.)

I would say that the church distances itself from situations in which abuse happens and lets the individuals take the fall, rather than standing behind its volunteers. For example, there was a case that Feminist Mormon Housewives reported on a few years ago, in which church lawyers carefully instructed the primary workers not to claim “church policy” on things like nursery workers, but just to say “we do it this way” not “the church tells us to do it this way”. Some of the primary workers felt that the church was covering its own butt, and leaving them exposed as possibly at fault when they were just following church guide lines.
