Sister Mishie's coming for dinner Thursday evening

The Sister Mishie's (stole that one from Reddit) are coming over for dinner tomorrow, no sympathies please. I actually don't mind them coming, it's fun to talk with them and hear about where they come from.

But I need to enact some NOM tricks. Last time they came, I tried getting them to use my cell phone to call home. That didn't work. One of them is from The Phillipines - so that is kinda $$$ to call.

Thoughts?

Would you ever consider talking to them about the NOM website? Maybe explain to them what a NOM is etc, etc. You're probably more of missionary for the NOMs than they are for the TBMs if you add up all the people who have read your posts.

I'm just curious....I know I would have been probably interested to hear about it when I was on my mission.

Have tiramisu for desert. They won't know whether or not they should finish it all.

Play non-MoTab music. Christmas music would be a plus. Bigger bonus if you can find some Filipino Christmas music.

Have your family members pray instead of the missionaries. Pray for the missionaries' comfort and safety. Omit the usual part of the prayer that asks for missionary opportunities.

Work on a charity project with them. Angel tree, cards/boxes for deployed soldiers, pet charities, whatever you can do from your house.

Do some holiday baking with them and send them home with a bunch of goodies.

Now that I think about it, you probably need to be careful that you don't go too far in expounding on your NOM beliefs or you could risk becoming a full blown apostate. I was just thinking more of a matter of fact discussion with the missionaries on the existence of the NOM fraction within the church. (If I remember correctly, you are pretty open about being a NOM, right?)

When I was on my mission, in the early 90's (pre-internet), we visited a part-member family where the dad of the family had apostatized after watching the GodMakers. The family was really nice and the apostate dad was always pretty friendly with us. Back then, ex-Mormons, and not just inactive Mormons, were very rare. He was the only one I met during my entire mission. On my first visit he explained that he had apostatized after watching the GodMakers, and he listed some of the church issues he had a problem with, but then he left it at that. He didn't try to deconvert us or anything and he was always friendly with us. For me, just the fact that he didn't have horns growing out of his head made a big impression on my young mind!

Without trying to pursuade TBM's to follow the NOM way, it would be great if NOM's could get more visibility in the church. Unfortunately, the church is still an all-or-nothing organization and so most NOM's eventually become ex-Mormons. However, it would be my hope that NOMs in the Mormon church could eventually become like the "cafeteria Catholics" in the Catholic Church. Like cafeteria Catholics, it would be nice to be able to be open about our disbelief, or the fact that we didn't follow all the nit picky religious rules, and still be accepted as a "Mormon." My NOM dream would be to actually be able to attend a family member's wedding as a NOM! It sure would be nice to be able attend my family member's weddings! Through I realize that this is a pretty far out there dream!
