My MIL is in town and staying with us for a few days. Honestly, we all get along well. Last night we got into a bit of a discussion about church stuff - Sam Young, bishop interviews, new book "Saints", etc.
MIL said there are some things that need changing, specifically regarding the 'worthiness interviews'. Without being rude, I commented that every organization will have a few bad apples but most Bishops try their best and are good people. My concern with Bishop interviews isn't with the bishop as an individual, but the organizational leadership and the policies they implement. MIL agreed.
Then I said, "If only there was someone in the church who could speak with a higher divine power and get a little guidance on this issue. Maybe even make a few updates before it becomes a problem." Which she promptly gave me the 1-finger-salute. (We can joke like that, it's OK)
Her response was - "Well, what to do you propose? Are you now a prophet or someone that can fix these things."
I responded "No, of course not. But I'm not claiming to be. I don't have the title of Prophet, Seer and Revelator and I'm not claiming some divinely guided leadership or asking for a sustaining vote of millions of people as such."
She had nothing to come back with.

And that's the entire point. We can point out what some of the more troubling aspects of church history/doctrine/practice, but then we are accused of trying to change the church in our image by the loyal followers. Uh, we're not the ones proclaiming divine communication to make any changes. So if someone IS on the batphone to God, why is the things the church does so screwed up? I have yet to see someone answer this question, and I can't count the number of times I've asked it. If anyone here has gotten an answer from anybody, can you let the rest of us know?Kishkumen wrote: ↑Thu Sep 13, 2018 10:33 am My MIL is in town and staying with us for a few days. I know you're taking a break, Kishkumen, but it's great to hear your (typing?) once again.
