At the 2018 National Annual Meeting of the Boy Scouts of America, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles made the following statements, “This isn’t a divorce. It’s growth. We’re not in any way disavowing any of those virtues of Scouting. It is just the charter part that we are separating from…We are friends now and we will be friends forever. In 18 months when our charters are finished, we hope that many LDS youth who wish to do so will still choose to be in Scouting.”
Yeah, right. Whatever new program they concoct will be designed from the ground up to consume every spare moment of these youth's lives.

Let's try this out. "Sorry Bishop Smith, I can't attend mutual because I have scout meeting with Troop 123 at the local Methodist church." What do you imagine will be the reaction of ward leadership?

Can you please ask the Methodists to hold scouting on another night.

Exactly, it won't take long for the church to start distancing itself.

We already have the situation that youth playing high school or club sports have game and practice conflicts and these are not considered a truly "worthy" alternative to attending whatever boondoggle is happening at mutual. These are tolerated because it is usually the "good" kids attending sports and school functions, but the abiding hope is that teenagers faithfully attend mutual weekly.
