Book of Abraham at Education Week

Post by Linked »

My parents are attending education week. A few weeks ago my dad was talking about the Book of Abraham and we talked about it's origin. This morning he mentioned that he went to an education week class about it yesterday and had another he would be attending today. They talked about how most of the scrolls were burnt, so we don't really know what was on them. The typical method of providing room to believe whatever you want, instead of considering it as objectively as possible.

We'll see what he learned today...
"I would write about life. Every person would be exactly as important as any other. All facts would also be given equal weightiness. Nothing would be left out. Let others bring order to chaos. I would bring chaos to order" - Kurt Vonnegut

I'll take "loose translations" for $200, Alex!

I'll bet the starting point equals "Joseph was infallible" and the discussion pivots from there and supports that conclusion.

It's the most absurd argument.

We know what he did translate is wrong, and there's no tangible proof that there were other scrolls beyond the "Book of Abraham" scroll and the "Book of Joseph" scrolls.

It's the most ridiculous thing - even if there were 20 scrolls, we know what he did translate was wrong. We know that he used source materials that Joseph *had in his possession* to write it.

Of course they have to try and pretend there is something else there that never existed to give space to believe, but it's just so dishonest. I posted that one site on the DD board, and it's just maddening because my wife will believe that before she will trust me on this subject... facts do not matter if someone can give you a lifeline no matter how ridiculous it might be.

The scrolls of Abraham and the scrolls of Moses are both mentioned in the Quran and are part of the Islamic religious scriptures. However, the scrolls that Joseph Smith translated were a funerary passport to the afterlife for some a guy named Hor, based on the Egyptian Book of Breathings.

Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

Missing scrolls are completely irrelevant. We have the facsimiles, and we have Joseph’s painfully obviously made-up joke of a translation of them. It’s a hoax, case closed.

This is my new fave interpretation!!!

When I was little, I used to think they were girls having a slumber party and dong each other hair and playing dress up. Also I used to think "of course we are the true church, we actually put pictures in these boring a$$ books."

What happened to "we don't teach that any more"?

Were apologists the kids in grade school who used the "Dog Ate My Homework" excuse?

Joseph's dog ate the missing scrolls, the golden plates, the sword of Laban, the pre-historic magic spectacles (Urim and Thummim), "Lamanite" DNA...

Poor dog. Now we can add animal abuse to the list of Joseph’s crimes. That dog must have quite bad indigestion, probably a pretty bad stomach ache from that sword.

The actual translation of the scrolls is this:

Without the right permit, Hor's can't breathe in the Afterlife. True story. Tell your dad about that.
