TEDX Talk: Why I Left An Evangelical Cult

I ran across this fascinating talk done by a young woman whose grandparents started a Christian cult called "The Assembly". The themes she touches on seem so familiar--control of information, control of bodies/behavior, control of women and minorities, coverups of abuse, charismatic leaders, etc.

I find her talk of dealing with shunning and deprogramming interesting.

I saw this too. The words: "all of us may have to grow up and leave something." "All cults reject the label 'cult.'" "Mainstream religious beliefs like.... women can't pierce their ears." "George (grandfather/leader) was a fantastic public speaker.... and a pathological liar." "The work of the Lord has a lot of rules." Sure rings some bells. "Language is controlled in cults because language is powerful."

Watched this, it was good wanted to show DW but realized she probably would have seen it as proof that we are most certainly not a cult.
