A young married man in our Ward spoke yesterday. He gave the topic and then begged forgiveness for the liberties he was going to take.

He brought in quotes from Kant, Lewis, Cicero and others to speak of beauty, love and peace. He talked about how we aren't truly loving if we judge someone because they are gay. We all say we are love the sinner but Jesus said to love your neighbor as yourself. He didn't say not to love someone who has left the church or to constantly call them to repentance.

I wish I had known what an awesome talk it was going to be and I would have recorded it.

After the meeting I went up to him and told him I really enjoyed the talk and wished that is what we heard in General Conference. He just smiled and said "I wish we would hear it too. We all need to be more loving and less judgemental."

It made my Sunday. Too bad he and his wife are moving this week to Hawaii.

That gives me hope for the coming generation. With family still in the church, I hope more show this loving spirit.

Very nice to hear , I often wonder if anybody still "gets it" in this world today. Gives me hope as well. Thanks for sharing that.

A lot of people "get it" today, but those people are normally not attending an LDS church. When they do, they commonly don't bring "it" up because "it" is not entirely welcome in the correlated lessons.

The talk you heard on Sunday sounded great. In my own way I also try to do the same by providing a wider range of ideas from great men and women throughout history. The last time I spoke in church I included quotes from Christopher Hitchens, Charles Buchowski, and a paragraph from "Fight Club" by Chuck Palahniuk. It was well received.

Today's Deseret News had an article about a San Francisco Gay Chorus joining the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in a joint concert. Very interesting.

Call me cynical, but I think the operative word/phrase might be “the last time I spoke in church...”

Good point. We will see which event happens next:

1. I lose my temple recommend
2. I get excommunicated
3. I get asked to speak in church

Believe it or not, I just renewed my temple recommend recently so it's anybody's guess. As far as the temple recommend questions, I just give them the Yes and No answers they want. It's another data point in my long running science experiment to find evidence of the spirit of discernment.
