Church Presense in Nevada
I an half-hearty looking at a job in the Reno, NV area. It would be a cross country move for the family, so there are plenty of issues there, but one question I have is what sort of presence or influence does the LDS church have in the area/state?

I haven’t lived there since I was little so I can’t speak to that much, but they do have a mini-temple there. The miniest of mini that I’ve ever seen. Keeps people from having to drive to Sacramento I suppose.

I think you'll be ok in Reno. There are several stakes and a temple, but I don't think the church has much social or cultural influence.Just This Guy wrote: ↑Tue Apr 03, 2018 6:10 am I an half-hearty looking at a job in the Reno, NV area. More rural and the church has a pretty strong hold on how things are done.
I really like Reno and it's becoming a quite eclectic city with great shows, a feeder basketball team, minor league baseball, lake Tahoe, decent shopping, skiing...

Reno is much less LDS than Vegas. You'll be fine.
Re: Church Presense in Nevada
You will be fine in Reno. Mormons are a definite minority. Plus you would only be half hour from Carson City.
Right now the housing market is crazy in Reno. Renting is nigh on impossible. If you don't mind a commute Carson, Gardnerville and Dayton are a bit better.
Hit me up if you want any more information.

I lived in Dayton during 4th grade when it was still tiny - before the canyon road to Virginia City was paved. It's still one of my favorite places in Nevada. I don't recognize it anymore though with all the new houses there!Evil_Bert wrote: ↑Tue Apr 03, 2018 9:13 pm You will be fine in Reno. Mormons are a definite minority. Small world isn't it. Depending on your age, and your family's activity, they probably would know my family. My parents have been active in the stake forever and seem to know everybody.
Dayton is exploding and with the huge business complexes coming into the area it will only get bigger. That is one of the places with reasonably priced housing where you get some land. Otherwise you are getting really close to your neighbors.
If you make it up this way sometime hit me up and we can do lunch or something.

It sure is. I was there when it was the Dayton Branch. Not sure if/when it became a ward. My parents were very TBM (still are) and we were in church every week there. I think my mom was in the primary presidency (can't remember for sure). 4th grade (maybe 3rd? ) would have been around 1992-1993. We lived there a year (the year between living Carson City and the move to Utah).
Re: Church Presense in Nevada
You have been gone a long time. They now have two wards in Dayton. Not really from any real growth, just people moving out of Carson to get better housing prices. We have had 4-5 families move out there in the last few years.

Yeah, it's been a while indeed. The 1-2 grade class was combined, I don't know if they had more than one. HS was tiny too, from what I can remember. I still like to take my wife back there every now and then (she'd never lived outside of SL Valley until we were married) to visit Virginia City.

Reno is super close to Lake Tahoe, which is one of my favorite places in the world. It is so beautiful there! I used to spend some time there every summer as a little girl. I don't remember much about the church there, but I do remember that the ward we would go to was full of fellow visitors :)

Yes the South Tahoe ward averages about 75 in the off seasons and 300+ during the summer. We try to go camping at the lake each summer but we've never been to sacrament meeting.
My wife and kids go to the beach once a week during the summer. Great area to live.

Well, It looks like the Reno opportunity isn't a good fit for me and my family, so I'll keep my eyes open. Thank you to everyone for your input.

Re: Church Presense in Nevada
I have a friend that grew up there...just didn't mind it..she was an inactive LDS but it wasn't a big deal..at the time just a few wards. But hey...I imagine it would be fun to live there and though the costs may be high for rent/homes...jobs should be good and I have heard that the schools beat Utah schools in a big way.

Hey yall,
I am going to be moving to Carson city in the next 2 months or so, from phoenix. Yeah, looking forward to this move...
Anyway, I asked RR if there were any NOM's in Reno or Carson he knew of and he directed me to this thread.
Evil_bert, are you there now?

Looks like several of us are in the greater Reno area. I'm several hours away, but end up there around once a month.
Re: Church Presense in Nevada
Yes I live in Carson City. Been here most of my life. I am in the Carson River Ward. Let me know when you will be here and I will look to meet up with you.
