SLC Support Group this Sunday (Nov 13)
SLC Support Group this Sunday (Nov 13)
Those of you who have been around for a while may have heard of the Religious Transitions Group, but I'm sure many haven't. It is a group that meets approximately bi-weekly at the South Valley Unitarian-Universalist society in Cottonwood Heights, UT for support of those experiencing a religious change in their life. Being Utah, of course, it's about 99% transitioning LDS. The group is run by Bill Dobbs, who is a very nice guy and moderates discussions around dealing with family, finding new beliefs, processing old beliefs, and so on - all the same kinds of things we talk about on this board. While the group has been very active for more than a decade (usually 15 to 25 people at each meeting), apparently it has been dwindling a bit lately and Bill recently sent out an email to the group mailing list asking about the viability of the group.
With that said, they are meeting this Sunday, November 13 at 12:30 p.m. at the SVUU building (6876 S Highland Drive, Cottonwood Heights, UT) to have the usual sharing but also talk about the group and where it is headed. I would be sad to see the group stop meeting, because it has been very helpful to hundreds, if not thousands, of people over the years. But it may have run it's course and most people attend for a while then move on with their lives.
So if you live in the SLC area and would like to get some real in-person social contact (as opposed to just internet), then that is a great place to do it!

Is this the same group that Deconstructor (from RFM) use to run? There's a thinly veiled question there, I know.

No, I'm pretty sure it's not. (I don't recall who deconstructor is IRL - want to PM me?).

I don't remember either but I thought he was heavily involved in the UU get togethers.fh451 wrote:No, I'm pretty sure it's not. (I don't recall who deconstructor is IRL - want to PM me?).

That's just a couple of miles from my house. I'll try to drop by.

Is it adults only?
Even if it's something disappointing, it's still better to know the truth. Because people can deal with disappointment. And once they've done that, they can feel that they have really grown. And that can be such a good feeling. -Fred Rogers

Normally, from what I recall. There is a kids play room down stairs, but I'm not sure if they make it available outside of normal services.trophywife26.2 wrote:Is it adults only?

I wasn't able to make it due to my required presence at the barbecue grill. Is there a URL that lists their meeting schedule?

They are listed on the SVUU's event calendar under "Religious Transition": www.svuus.org/welcome/event-calendar/. I don't know how up-to-date that calendar is.

Interesting. They seem to meet on the third Sunday of each month, except in January when there are meetings on three consecutive weeks.fh451 wrote:They are listed on the SVUU's event calendar under "Religious Transition": http://www.svuus.org/welcome/event-calendar/. Yeah, I would take that January schedule with a grain of salt. Check back and see if they update it, and I will also forward any notices I get from the email list.Hagoth wrote:Interesting.
