Radio Free Mormon concludes General Conference Post Mortem with the Sunday Afternoon session.
The highlight was Elder Ardern's talk admonishing members to seek answers to their questions only from church approved sources.

I have to say I was glad to hear this talk.
I can't count the number of times I have argued with apologists that the church discourages reading from non-church approved sources, only to have them come back at me and challenge me to find a place where they actually come out and say this point blank.
Up to this point, I have had difficulty finding such a source. I mean, the messaging is all over the place, but it has been difficult to find somebody actually coming out and saying it.
The search is over.

The lessons for developing teacher s also cover this. It's usually in the front of every lesson manual as well.

Can you post a link to this?
OP, thanks for mentioning this talk and podcast! I try to be gentle in my judgement of the church, but this topic still gets me pissed off! Hopefully I don't stew in rage for three months over it. Blar...

A lot of the material im thinking of is older and no longer on the church site.
This ensign talk had the same concepts though

Look for his use of "on safe ground" and
"President J. Reuben Clark’s instructions to a group of professional teachers apply to all teachers in the Church. He said, “Your essential and all but sole duty, is to teach the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. … You are to teach this Gospel using as your sources and authorities the Standard Works of the Church, and the words of those whom God has called to lead His people in these last days. You are not … to intrude into your work your own peculiar philosophy, no matter what its source or how pleasing or rational it seems to you to be.” (“The Charted Course of the Church in Education” [an address delivered at the Brigham Young University Summer School in Aspen Grove, Utah, 8 Aug. 1938, p. 9].)"

Great podcast about conference! The inflammatory statements that Oaks made kind of overshadowed the rest of confererence, but there was still an amazing number of crazy messages in the other talks! Radio Free Mormon’s podcast does a great job analyzing them all!
I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again, Conference (and the scriptures) are much more interesting as a nonbeliever than they ever were as a TBM!

Then the Lord hasn't seen fit to reveal anything to his servants on that issue and you should stop bugging us about it because we don't know!!!

Father, forgive them for they know not what they [don't] do.

Et voilà! We can now begin our attack on Castle Wolfenstein. Armed with this new confirmation, Consiglieri will be able to take on and topple Baron von Peterson. Callooh Callay!

1. Fast and Pray.
2. Put a rock in your hat and wait for it to respond.
I can see why apologists would resist the idea of looking for answers exclusively from LDS venues: It is too limiting. Sort of like being back to that denying the arts, sciences, and philosophies of men nonsense. When you tie your self exclusively to allegorical works and speculations drawn from those works you are reliving the Dark Ages.

The idea is that if you're asking questions that there aren't answers for, and that's a problem for you, then you either need to repent or are already too far gone.

Just don't ask Elder Oaks how to repent.

Ya, because that is too hard of a question. He would have to avoid those kinds of questions.
I loved the analogy of trying to find out the truth about Ford trucks from the Ford dealership.
If you listen to well-informed, but disinterested third parties about the church you will hear respect for the church's organizational abilities and their mind-control powers and family focus, but people are generally astonished that so many members take it all literally.

President Newsroom said it in the Deseret News over 10 years ago. It was a very heavy item on my overladen shelf at the time.

Consig, I listened to most of your analysis of Ardern's talk, and I think it was well done. The light and shadows metaphor was apt. It could be mentioned that light from different angles helps eliminate shadows, and thus seeking knowledge from different viewpoints could help answer questions. I doubt that Elder Ardern would like that continuation of his metaphor. And maybe you add it in the next section. I've only listened up to about 48:00.
