Just finished "Restoring Christ -- Leaving Mormon Jesus for the Jesus of the Gospels".

Its a fast read, split into 2 basic areas: the Jesus of the NT vs. LDS Jesus, and some interesting historical things about JS, including concubinage as well as the Council of 50 and treason.

Palmer doesn't really go super deep into the topics but it does introduce them and suggests additional research. After reading the stuff on the Council of 50, I understand a lot better why BY was such an a-hole with how he treated just about everyone, especially those who wanted to leave the church: in the guys mind the church was at war with the United States; the goal was overthrow of the United States and the establishment of a theocratic monarch with the prophet as king of the world. This stuff -- if there weren't records, and there are -- would be unbelievable.

Anyway,...anyone else read it?....comments?

Haven’t read it yet, but has the makings of a good rated R war movie

Grant Palmer's position really appeals to me. It is similar to the mainstream Christian view I sometimes encountered on my mission. I think he is saying one really can't fully benefit from Christian belief unless one focuses on the real Jesus instead of the real church.

Thank you Grant wherever you are. Thank you for being a man of integrity and publicly facing the truth despite the losses in your personal life. Thank you for leading me towards the path of truth.

Sad about Grant's passing. I think he and Lyndon Lamborn are two of my lds people I look up to for having the courage of their convictions.

I like them both. Lyndon's book was also influential.

Sorry to hear about Grant's passing. He is a good guy. I don't think he was in it for ego at all. I think he started with frustration and moved into bewilderment and probably some anger there as well. Then, his own personal integrity required him to voice his concerns.

I hate how the church covers up the early Utah treason behavior with the fake patriotism of the mormon battalion. It's as if we were just always flag waving pro USA all along to the average member.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 29, 2017 at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East Dimple Dell Drive (10600 South) in Sandy. A viewing will be held Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. and Friday morning from 9-10:30 a.m. prior to the services.

I just read of Grant's passing, and I'm saddened. I wish I could go to the services, but I'm committed to visit family this weekend. I will miss Grant's writings and viewpoint. God bless us, every one.

I was able to attend. It was held at the mortuary chapel, not an LDS church, and was not conducted by a mormon bishop. Each of his children spoke and the grand children sang. It was obvious as each of his children spoke whether still a believer or not, but they were all respectful of their father.

I'm sorry I missed this! I was in Southern Utah on an adventure. I have fond memories of a couple of lunches with Grant last year in the year prior; he an outstanding human. It was enjoyable and interesting to hear some of his stories first hand. He was a key part in my exit.
