Re: Official Crisis Declaration
All joking aside, this is a soapbox item for me, given my ex-husbands addiction and subsequent overdose death due to painkillers.
One of my cousins is a doctor that is heavily involved in helping people overcome addiction. I listened to a few of his radio shows that were online a few years ago and something that really stood out was the fact that he never addressed how doctors would write out opiate prescriptions so readily, at least until the point that their patient started exhibiting the signs of addiction. I've told many different doctors to NOT write an opiate scrip because I wasn't going to fill it anyway, and they think I'm weird. Even for my then 15-year-old son for some stitches one time.
Yeah, there are absolutely times when opiates are needed and everyone reacts differently to pain, but opiates don't actually alleviate cause of the pain, they just make your brain think there isn't pain. There are other drugs (or other options) that work on the actual pain, but most people don't do research and doctors seem to just want to take the easy route. JMO, obviously.

This is more to support that it's important to do your own research. I had a roommate who was a nursing student and had those giant books listing all the currently available pharmaceuticals. This was back in the 80s, so it was only two giant books. One day she injured her leg and the doctor prescribed medicines for the healing process. As her roommate, it was on me to see to her care. I had to get up at three in the morning to help her get to the bathroom to throw up. Things like that.HighMaintenance wrote: ↑Fri Aug 11, 2017 7:21 pm All joking aside, this is a soapbox item for me, given my ex-husbands addiction and subsequent overdose death due to painkillers.

One day, I came home from school and she was sitting up alert in her bed with one of the pharmaceutical books on her lap. She said one of the side effects of one of her medications was it would make her sleep and cause nausea. She looked up and found medications that would provide the same healing without the side effects. She called the doctor and had him place a prescription for the new medication for her.
Now, we're not able to do that, but we can ask if what is being prescribed is an opiate. I believe this problem is a big one. Right now, my conspiratorial side is wondering how much of this problem is manufactured. I'm wondering if Big Pharma created a drug that could cure opiate addiction and then created all these opium-based pain killers to create a demand for the addiction curing drug.
Still, if it is a problem, no matter how small, it should be addressed and those people helped and potential addiction avoided.

Shockingly enough, "The Donald" is actually much more inspired than LDS-Inc. in this instance.
As far as I can tell, the church literally ignores the Opiod crisis, if not underhandedly promoting it...
