In the largest analysis of its kind, scientists looked at data from more than 500,000 people in 10 European countries, including the UK, to explore the effect of coffee consumption on the risk of death.

Researchers from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and Imperial College London found that higher levels of coffee consumption were associated with a reduced risk of death from all causes, particularly from circulatory and digestive tract diseases.

Lead author Dr Marc Gunter of the IARC said: "We found that higher coffee consumption was associated with a lower risk of death from any cause, and specifically for circulatory diseases, and digestive diseases.

That is bittersweet news for Mormon. This is on top of finding out that green tea is the single healthiest beverage that one can drink. Well, at least they will have their unpasteurized unhomogenized milk (or Dr. Pepper) followed by their mystery meat.

So next time that fetching airline stewardess asks James Bond, "Coffee, Tea, or me, Mr. Bond" he might consider his health and choose coffee. How about you?

Violation of Word of Wisdom versus violation of chastity does make a compelling argument. In the interest of longevity I will continue consuming caffeine at higher temperatures.

I interested in the experience of people on a mission asking their investigators to give up coffee and tea. I really never ran into this on my mission in Canada out of sheer luck. But what about missionaries in Asian countries where tea is prominently consumed? How difficult is this and how would you approach someone who had only this tea drinking violation blocking the path to baptism? Were there any faith promoting rumors about the dangers of tea? That question alone sounds insane.

The obscure part of the word of wisdom (hot drinks) got focused on and now if you drink tea or coffee you are doomed to hell. These hot drinks have been proven to be good for your health.

Meanwhile the much less obscure part of the word of wisdom (eat meat sparingly) that everyone chooses to ignore, actually has much more scientific basis.

I served in Japan, very tea heavy. We mostly brought in members to help with the tea question because we weren't in a good position as American's to tell them to change their culture. They said the tea leaf was bad, tanic acid or something like that, and that it was what made the little Japanese grandmas hunched over and shorter. It was never too big of a deal in my experience, smoking was the hardest one I saw. A wheat tea was often served at ward functions.

Let me get this straight:

Wheat is Triticeae Triticum and is "wheat tea" when placed in hot water.

The tea plant is Camellia Sinensis is simply "tea" when placed in hot water.

I'm simply not seeing the moral distinction, but there is simply no official forum for discussing "plant parts in hot water" with doctrinal authorities.

I've been thinking many thoughts about the Word Of Wisdom, today. They boil down to this.

The restriction against hot drinks really does make the Word Of Wisdom nothing more than a canister of doctrinal Cheez-Whiz.

I really did think of Cheez-Whiz. That's not just a play off your OP.

Are you sure it wasn't Barley? Or more specifically: Mild Barley? ;)

You are preaching to the choir here.

I have no idea what the official names of the plants are. The bad teas were made from the tea plant. These included green tea, black tea, and I think they had a milk tea that used the tea leaves. But not wheat tea.

Funny you mention that. It is, in fact, barley. But they translated it to wheat for us gaijins. I just ordered some off Amazon. Maybe that's how they justified it, it's right there in the scriptures!

Don't forget white tea (bad)

Brigham Tea (good)- yes, it's named non-ironically after Brigham Young

Then, there's the whole plethora of herbal teas (good) that, at one time, sold more in Utah than anywhere else in the country, but there are many, many Nazi TBMs who will avoid these because of the whole appearance of evil.

One if these days, I think I'll put on Devil's horns and drink some herbal.

You'de think we would award white tea the stamp of being pure and delightsome and declare it to have been among the valiant plants in the Heaven War. More so that its green sibling, or that "black tea of the family" who is barred from being sipped during the Daze of '47 festivities.
