A tbm friend posted his response to a question on quora and posted it to his Facebook time line. I am just so totally out of the church that this is appears so freaking stupid now. Its like trying to figure out something from a harry potter movie.

Visiting Kingdoms
Re: Visiting Kingdoms
I am imagining Jerry and George sitting at the cafe table arguing about whether Superman has a super sense of humor. On the other hand, these questions used to be very important to me. I was preparing for eternity.20/20hind wrote: ↑Thu Jun 29, 2017 7:25 pm A tbm friend posted his response to a question on quora and posted it to his Facebook time line. I will add that since I have stopped trying to believe I have been stunned a couple of times by amazingly weird statements at church. But I need to be charitable. I can still remember what it's like to have these ideas feel real.
Re: Visiting Kingdoms
I remember when my shelf started cracking one of the first things I felt was total disbelief of the D&C. Even now, like with this article, if someone uses D&C as a source or reference I stop reading. It's automatic disqualification.
Re: Visiting Kingdoms
Absolutely feel the same way re. D&C.
Also as much as any of us wanted to be able and prepared to answer questions such as the one raised, this person needs to realize that his answer is totally meaningless because he isn't the current prophet.
Doesn't matter if he can support it with scripture. The prophet is the only one who can say what that scripture really means. In essence it makes a member's scripture study interesting but not authoritative in the least.
Bruce R. Mcconkie learned this the hard way when he wrote Mormon Doctrine.
Oddly, no current prophet would touch this question with a ten foot pole in a public forum. The price for appearing so exclusive would be to high and embarrassing.

Re: Visiting Kingdoms
When people try and delve into doctrine it is amusing. Doctrine in reality is just a set of beliefs with no tangible reality. Doctrine is just an opinion or a group of opinions on something someone once claimed as reality. In other words no one knows anyting. It is just all people trying to make sense out of sometimes nonsensical statements.
If I claimed a doctrine that all dogs go to heaven but cats go to hell how much debate and opinion could I generate? Of course that is just a statement that shows bias towards cats, and in reality is nothing more than an idea I dreamed up because I do not like cats.
So when anyone asks a question on Mormon Doctrine they are just asking what is the consensus most people believe. Not what actually is.

Re: Visiting Kingdoms
Not exactly on topic, but supportive of the general theme. When I removed the blindfold from my eyes and my eyes came into focus and looked around, I was shocked, amazed appalled at just how many things that are taught that either enable abuse or groom victims. Like a good religious person, I sought to warn my neighbor. I discovered they don't want to know.
I go to church, now, especially since I've been looking into Taoism and I am stunned by, not only how much I no longer relate, but how much I don't care. I truly feel like a visitor from another denomination. I think it's fascinating what they find uplifting. I think it's sweet. I feel happy in their presents, because they are happy, but I don't relate one single bit to what they find nourishing. There might be a concept or two that, in general, we have some similar ground, but it doesn't take long for the divergence on even those topics to start. Part of my attendance, now, is truly just for social aspects and anthropology.

Re: Visiting Kingdoms
It's the theological version of "Who's Line is it Anyway" where the rules are made up and the points don't matter. The "problem" that these LDS believers are trying to solve is the unintentional eternal consequence of question 7 in the official temple recommend interview:

It's kind of sketchy associating with this nebulous group of heretics in mortality and it just might be made permanent in the after-life. Mormons accidentally believe in this weird "Sad Heaven".Do you support, affiliate with, or agree with any group or individual whose teachings or practices are contrary to or oppose those accepted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?
