It's all backwards!

Any member will tell you that what makes our church great is that it's led by prophets and apostles. They see the members as just trying to stay up to the standards of those men.

I think it's just the opposite!

If those guys would get out of the way, stop telling us who to persecute, and stop hogging all of the money, and stop wasting everybody's time with useless busywork, the good people of this church could really do some good in the world.

The more I have thought about this, the more I feel like the Q 15 are not only NOT prophets, but they are corrupt. To me, the best example of this would be how they give talks saying you should pay your tithing before other bills or basic necessities. Then tell those awful stories about how some poor family on a remote island worked for 10 years doing back breaking labor to be able to afford to go to LDS Inc's luxurious temple to perform Masonic rituals. And don't forget that while this family slept on a dirt floor, ate scraps for dinner, and walked around in tattered clothes, they still paid their tithing to be "worthy" to go to the temple. Meanwhile, the 12 sit in their gated communities, making 6 figures with no kids left at home to support, and get numerous other benefits and perks for their families. They disgust me.

I also love how they refuse to:
a) get up in conference and address spouses of disaffected members, and say that God wants them to put their marriages first.
And b) apologize for the awful anti child/gay policy

You are right Hagoth, they need to get the Hell out of our way.

This is the only prayer I could summon for the LDS church at general conference. I want to hear Dieter or Henry say this or at least an apostle. I want to hear them quote 1 Corinthians 7:12-14 for the first time ever in recorded LDS history.

I want to hear an apostle say they welcome all genders, sexualities and stages of belief and unbelief, unconditionally. With a respect for each individual's personality, biology and stage of life.

If they can tell the racists the blacks can be treated equal and to suck it up, they have the power to put this right - truth is they don't want to, they are still an echo chamber, with 1950s values and a belief in his satanic majesty ruling over this earth.

I was just talking about this someone who is tired of the church taking up all his and his family's time. There is no space to innovate, correlation and the demand to kneel to authority has incentivized people to not rock the boat, don't think outside the box, no criticism allowed. The value proposition just isn't making sense to people.

Amen. Corrupt indeed.

I can imagine an apostle saying exactly that... during this upcoming general conference no less. The problem (if you want to call it that) is the word "welcome." What does it mean?

I believe it would get translated into "love the sinner, not the sin" or "be nice to people, but continue to keep them at arm's length by not allowing them to hold certain callings, go to the temple, or participate fully in the community."

So while I can easily imagine an apostle inviting all to be more welcoming I think the apostle would have to go the extra mile, cite specifics, for the message to be received.

Makes me think of some lines from Luke 20:

45-47 With everybody listening, Jesus spoke to his disciples. “Watch out for the Conference speakers. They love to walk around in suits, preen in the radiance of public flattery, bask in prominent positions, sit at the head table at every church function. And all the time they are exploiting the weak and helpless. The longer their prayers, the worse they get. But they’ll pay for it in the end.”

Amen Hagoth! Preach on brother.

Oh the good we could do in my ward boundaries with the tithing resources from the ward, the time from callings, and the freedom to pursue our ideas for good!

It might be different it there was an entire continent of potentially tribute-paying gay people that they could look forward to converting.

So far it seems to mean welcome to stop being you and start being what we want you to be. But right now that isn't even an option for children of gay parents until they're 18.

Agree to an extent - but the way Europe is going, it looks like they are losing a continent anyway.

I understand. I would like the 'welcome' be accompanied by a chastisement of anyone who alienates spouse, child or congregation member, or stands in judgement of them. Expecting the brethren to say that us sinners NOM, Gays etc are validated by history and science is a bridge too far.

If this is to happen - more inclusion, I don't expect it to be in the next 5 - 10 years, and it will be as a result of haemorrhaging church numbers. Unfortunately I think the mass exodus from the church will be interpreted as - the last days and satan by the brethren and convince them they are right in their opinions (church grows it's because it's the lords true church coming out of obscurity, if it declines it's because it is the lords true church standing alone as a voice of truth in the bleak and dreary world: tails I win, heads you lose).

I don't see me hanging around for the eventual change, I'm mid 40s now, I could see me being in my 60's before we see the church as it should be, by which time hopefully they haven't squandered all their money on vanity projects and they can use the infrastructure to do some good in the world e.g. equal meeting time to service time, tithing based on surplus with financial transparency, and local decision making on 50% of funds, all missions service based, consider a part time paid clergy so members can spend time with their families. Oh well, I can dream.

And in the 2037 - 2057 time frame they're finally the church they should be... for the year 2017. That's to say they'd still be a few generations behind.
