I think whether there is a place for your family is highly dependent on location--it's totally a priesthood and ward roulette thing. The current culture in the Church is very intolerant of people who don't get with the program 100%. I think this is changing little by little, but the expectation is that every member be completely involved--all three hours of church every week, regular home and visiting teaching, full 10% of gross income tithing, accepting every calling, and believing exactly the same as the Brethren teach. In order to "belong" in your ward, you'd have to have great boundaries and sympathetic local leadership.
