Oh, there are some other gems in the full list:
God-Ordained Marital Intimacy/Worldly Sex
Keep in mind she came up with this list when she wrote a book on marital intimacy while she was still single.

That's funny. Wendy was in her fifties when she married an 82 year old widower. Not only was she single when she wrote this "advice", she was also likely a virgin. Forgive me if I lack sufficient faith in her experience in this arena.TheRunningmom wrote:Oh, there are some other gems in the full list:

Imagine a historian of ancient Judea who had never read Flavius Josephus. Or a computer scientist who has never written source code. Consider a mechanic who has read the manuals, but never opened the hood of a car. How much faith would you have in their practical abilities? I'm not claiming that all knowledge must be gained by direct experience. I certainly don't need to experiment with heroin to have an opinion on it. But I also can't claim to truly know what it would be like.
Marriage and relationships and (marital) sex are considered good and virtuous in LDS culture, but Wendy was handing out advice before she had the full experience. Plus, her first physically intimate encounter would likely have very little in common with an average young married couple in their twenties. She spent the decade of her twenties holding back any libido. The mass of humanity who married before age 30 was negotiating hormones, inexperience with life in general, and a relationship with another similarly inexperience person. We were managing our desires, not repressing them or singing "Turn it Off, Like a Light Bulb" with Sister Nelson.

What inspired her to write this talk? Why does the church continually try to control what goes on in the bedroom? Just let couples actually enjoy their sex life in any way they see fit. So many wait years to act on that overwhelming urge, fighting tooth and nail to suppress it and then when they can finally explore what this side of them means the church swoops in and tries to spoil all the fun. Honestly do couples want to turn their entire sex life with their spouse into a sacrament meeting? So weird.

I'm pretty sure she's never been in the military, so she'd know nothing about martial intimacy.Hagoth wrote:Isn't that kind of like taking flying lessons from a fish?MoPag wrote:"Aunt Wendy" is telling us about martial intimacy.

I bet she sings "praise to the man"before knocking russells spokes in.
You have to admit, that would be a pretty catchy tune for such an event, the beat is just about right.

I think we're being too hard on this woman for her lack of *ahem* hands on experience?
I've never shot up heroin but I'm still qualified to give my kids some good advice on the matter. She was a family and marriage therapist, right? She has some idea what she's talking about even if she is pretty laughable
*edit* (Oops...I read through corsair's post too fast and missed you making exactly this point. Sorry! I agree with much of what you said but think some of the comparisons a little off. It seems more like complaining about a an ancient Jewish scholar who doesn't practice Judaism.)

Sister Nelson's views on marital sex are harmful, weird, unnatural, and more than a little creepy. I know this is horrible to say, but she is lucky that when she did get married her husband was 82 and sex wasn't as much of an issue. I pity the poor young married couple who listens to anything she has to say about marital intimacy.

You make a good point (and I am a fan of your avatar). Sister Nelson does, in fact, have a PhD and I can only imagine the coursework involved. I won't give her a hard time on her credentials. I will give her a hard time on the astonishingly poor quality of her advice.LaMachina wrote:I think we're being too hard on this woman for her lack of *ahem* hands on experience?

The problem is that her advice is being dispensed with no chance to critically inquire about how accurate or useful it is. There are some young marriages that are now on a course towards strife because one of the partners is taking her advice seriously. If she was just a family therapist then few people would care. There are good LDS therapists with great and practical advice for married couples. Sister Nelson would be ignored except she is the wife of the likely next Prophet of God adored by millions. She is not competing in the marketplace of ideas based on knowledge or practical benefits of her advice. It's based on being married to a Prophet who literally speaks with God. He could not have made a mistake in who he married so whatever she says will carry a lot of weight for many unfortunate young couples out there.

Totally. Her advice is a pile of hot garbage. My only hope is people will treat her comments the way most of us treat the advice given by that crazy family member. With a smirk, an eye roll and a "whatever you say Aunt Wendy!!"Corsair wrote:You make a good point (and I am a fan of your avatar). I thought everyone paused just as the romance begins to blossom and offer a special prayer for the Holy Ghost to guide during those intimate moments. I've noticed when I don't invite the HG to reside within me that my parts don't perform quite as well.

I thought Paranormal sexual experiences ended after the greatest immaculate conception of them all. That being when Kim Kardashian was visited by the ghost of 2Pac, impregnated, and then instructed to seek out Kanye West for cover and covenant to never do an interview with TMZ!

This is an excellent point - if she wasn't married to President Nelson she'd just be some random therapist with some really loony ideas about sex. All by themselves her ideas are dangerous enough - but the credibility of coming from President Nelson's wife makes them the more dangerous because some members will actually listen to them.Corsair wrote:The problem is that her advice is being dispensed with no chance to critically inquire about how accurate or useful it is. We should all be concerned that she is using her status as President Nelson's wife to push her harmful ideas on members. Is she going to start pushing "The Not Even Once Club" in devotionals too? It isn't that I think wives of General Authorities should be seen and not heard - my concern is that Sister Nelson has some really dangerous ideas, and she doesn't seem to feel hesitant to use her husband's position to promote them. She makes me nervous.

I guess so? As long as your foreplay includes asking an invisible guy who wears a toga to send his pet ghost to "help" you, why not?Red Ryder wrote:So your saying foreplay actually invites the Holy Ghost into the bedroom?wtfluff wrote:After more than 40 years, I finally understand what "Buoyed UP by the spirit" means...2bizE wrote:I thought everyone paused just as the romance begins to blossom and offer a special prayer for the Holy Ghost to guide during those intimate moments. So, I wondered it they were going to change "revelation" to "inspiration" in the print form. I remember reading somewhere that they did that to one of Packer's talks. They finally put the print versions of the talks on lds.org https://www.lds.org/broadcasts/article/ ... w?lang=engHagoth wrote:Yup, Elder Nelson has established himself as the mouthpiece of the mouthpiece of God.Silver Girl wrote:Apparently, we need the prophets to say things, and Nelson to clarify that what they said was revelation. I checked and it is still revelation.
But they waited almost a whole week to put he print version out. It shouldn't have taken that long if he had notes from the teleprompter? Right? So I wonder if they debated whether to change it or not.Get to know Him by studying all He continues to teach through His living prophets and apostles. Study “The Family: A Proclamation to the World.” Study “The Living Christ” document. These were both received by revelation. Post them online and where you can see them daily.
