For my entire middle-aged life, I have heard that the time for keeping one foot in the world and one in the church is about to end. It never quite does. I don't think they want to lose the worldly but tithe-paying members.

That is because the church draws the hard lines! It won't really let us be in as much as we can be. I can't have both feet in because it just isnt true. If I don't get both feet in I can't participate fully with my family.

+5 for just telling the old man happy birthday and not trying to convert him.

I think Mormons OFTEN fail at seeing people deeply because we only see them as potential future members.

ETA: +5 for a story about a female helping another female (young woman seeking out the older woman). Back when we were going to church, my teenage daughter very often sat with moms who clearly had their hands full. I never told her to do it. She just did it.
