Maybe that's why OC had so much trouble translating. When you have to guess something and then get a yes or no response to it's correctness, then it would be very difficult to guess right.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Prays, No. Okay.
"Two households, both alike in dignity." No Okay.
"In the beginning, god created the heaven and the earth." No Okay.
"Marley was dead." No ...
"It is a truth universally acknowledged" No Sigh!
"It was a bright cold day in April" No
"In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice"No
"Call me Ishmael." No Really?
"All children, except one, grow up." No
"Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins." No Common!
"All this happened, more or less." No
"In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit." No Your kidding me!
"In the week before their departure to Arrakis" No
"Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy" No &^%#&^!!
"It was a dark and stormy evening." No
"I, Bob, having been born of goodly parents." No That's it. I give up! You can do it from here Joseph.
pure comic genius! Hire this guy/gal

But seriously this is exactly the model for revelation and ancient document translation defined in D&C 9! Gold plates are not needed

This is fantastic and I'm jealous that I did not think of this post.

I'm regularly annoyed that apologists and prophets steer away from testable claims. Joseph Smith did himself and his successors a huge favor by never detailing the translation process beyond "translated by the power of God." It removes all obligation of them to firmly talk about tight or loose translations. David Whitmers story of "face in the hat" removes having to make claims of what Joseph saw since only Joseph saw it. Problems with translation are blamed on loan shifting or the influence of Joseph's cultural background.
