The LDS Church basically contracted out to do genealogy for the Australian government for access, and so my Uncle and Aunt we're paying to basically work a 40 he a week job, alongside many gentiles doing the same work for pay. I was pretty surprised that my Uncle seemed a little disappointed in their mission, and even irritated that he'd spent so much time and money in that way. Still TBM...but not very fulfilling mission for him.
Maybe they got to go to Bondi Beach on weekends? That would have been fulfilling... 8-)

This is why it is so much worse than being unpaid labor. Mission Presidents don't allow missionaries to take a vacation day. If you want to do some minor sightseeing within your area then that can be allowed. But I doubt that TBM Uncle and Aunt are family with much of Australia beyond the town they were in and specifically their apartment and microfilm center. Did they go to Ayer's Rock? Alice Springs? Sydney Opera House? Great Barrier Reef? Blue Mountains National Park? Daintree National Park? I would be shocked if they did a visit more exciting than changing planes in Hawaii.

I think they did do some sightseeing...but I think they only had a day or maybe normal weekends to do it. Basically he made it sound like he was doing a monotonous job alongside others doing a monotonous job for pay.

Oh, and he was a rocket scientist for NASA, his last job before retirement was working on the last shuttle. Talk about a downgrade in jobs.

Back on the old forum, someone posted a screen shot of the current postings for senior mission couples. I remember it had everything from office assistants, oil well/petroleum engineers, heavy equipment operators, to janitors, nurses, and game wardens. I remember at the time calculating that the posting along represented around a million dollars a year on the open market, not counting benefits. The total senior missionary program probably represents hundreds of millions of dollars a year of salaries (some of it low skill, but much of it high skill, and high wage) that the church is able to guilt people into doing for free.

My Aunt and Uncle, who was an engineer, when on a senior mission. She spent 2 years fixing plumbing and wells while she watched. My course and his wife also went on a senior mission. He was an accountant, and he did accounting for the church in Africa. I am not sure what his wife did. Pressuring seniors into spending their retirement doing what they did for 40 years is exploitation.

How about the GA's. Maybe they could take an early emeritus status, and then get called back to do it for free for a couple more years.

That kind of talk will get you back passing the sacrament, pal. You'll be serving in the nursery for the next 10 years and the library after that.

I love that suggestion! The idea of the greatest being the least went out the window long ago.

Can I be the one the extend the first calling to them?

"Thank you Elder Ballard for accepting the calling of Stake IT and AV tech support specialist. I know you had some misgivings about the calling that you don't really know what you are doing. Remember that the Lord would not call you if he didn't know you would be able to handle the calling. "Whom the Lord calls, the Lord qualifies.' I know you will grow into the calling.

When we are done, can you see Sister Collins in the Family History Center? She is having a gateway authentication error in the WAN.

Also, don't forget the EQ is holding a moving party for the Tanner family and their 13 kids. We need someone who can help load up the furniture,a dn boy do they have a lot of it."

BECAUSE they were on their mission, two of their grandchildren were just missed by a car that certainly would have hit and killed them without the added blessing of grandparents on a mission. BECAUSE of their mission none of their children have fallen into financial ruin. I mean, if you think about it, who can afford NOT to serve a senior mission? If you choose the selfish route, anything bad that happens to your family will be your fault because you failed to protect them by serving a mission.
This is truly a sick message, especially for those who are trying their hardest to be faithful and bad stuff happens. What does that mean about them? What did they do wrong?
This.

God is not in the business of killing the grandchildren of those who don't serve missions or causing the destruction of families of the children of those who don't serve missions. Some people's minds are so tiny it is shocking.

I'm still waiting to hear the dope on the couple that Deacon Blues started this thread with. What's the scoop. How come the lady gave her husband of 40 years the ol' heave ho? Couldn't have had anything to do with a mission for crying out loud. Where'd they go? This could be good.

To me, church missions for seniors is one of the best things the church offers, especially the ones where they are non-proselyting. Do you think more seniors would go if they didn't have to be temple worthy? I do. Course I'm dumber than a pack mule....

If someone says that they believe in Christ and are Christian, and they don't want to serve others, well, we all know that doesn't work. There's lots to do and you have to hand it to the Church, they are organized enough to put you to work. But I have been out of the loop for a couple years and I'm not sure if you have to be temple ready. If you do, alas, that ain't gonna happen....not unless they....hell, they won't do that. (sigh)
