I find this question interesting. Because my knee jerk answer to the question would be that I would rather resign than lie to get an inheritance no matter what the size.

The funny thing is that I am still active at church without any promise of an inheritance.

But for me, I am not pretending. I never say anything I don't believe. I call out dangerous teachings if I hear them. I am respectful of others beliefs and don't choose to be in everyone's face, but I also am willing to drop clues for those with the ears to hear and the eyes to see.

I think for me it comes down to me choosing to do this journey WITH my wife.

As long as she wants to be in the community, I am going to choose to be with her.

The only caveat to that statement is this. And she knows it. If the church leadership pushes asks me to do things that I am uncomfortable with, then it is possible for the church to push me out.

But until that day comes, I choose to be with my wife.

I guess that's worth more to me than a multi-million $ inheritance.

We all know that money can't buy happiness, but it can buy you a boat, and a truck to pull it.

I think considering this in terms of economic value makes sense. You can assign just about anything an economic value in good old USD. So what is the cost (value) of doing whatever it takes to get the inheritance? What is the value of the inheritance? If the inheritance is significantly larger than the cost, then do what you've got to do. But only the individual can determine the personal cost.

And money is freedom. With enough money you are free to pursue the noblest or basest of interests. You can even buy influence (like Alas' suggestion). Money is a tool, and in this equation your friend should consider what that tool can do.

This is true. We shall see, by outward appearances this friend is still TBM anyway, so its a moot point. There have just been complaints about how dogmatic and controlling the old dude is, in particular about the church.
