We went through this with my mother. It is hard. I am glad she is doing better and breathing on her own, and yes, the joking is a good sign. People just lain heal better when they can keep their spirits up.
I was just grateful that with my mom, when it came time to let her go, she was able to make the decision for herself. I was the designated decision maker if she had not been able to make her own decision, so I was glad not to have to say to unplug the machines.

In am so glad to hear your mother is improving. I do not know her or you per se, but I know the love shared between mother and son. Best wishes for you both.

She was still pretty out of it but she was joking a little bit, I think that's always a good sign.
Sorry to hear you've been going through this, but glad she seems to be doing well.

Ah, so glad to hear there is more hope and she is off the ventilator. And joking too, that's great!
My father went on a ventilator last November (our NOM group supported me then too) but with a great nurse, he was off in two days. It was terrible to watch. He is a smoker and I had been warned he might not be able to come off of it. He ended up leaving the hospital a week or two later and has managed to keep himself out thank goodness.
Hope she keeps getting better and you get to spend a lot of time with her!

I appreciate all this so much you guys. I know some of you have been through some pretty hard losses. I guess grief and worry over loss is pretty much a certain inevitability for everyone.

So update... My step mom just told me my dad had emergency heart surgery. Happened really fast I guess, he's heading home tomorrow. So that's another parental crisis. When it rains it pours, it seems.
My mom is doing pretty well, but she is going to need to go into assisted living. Her husband has money enough to pay for a good one, which is a nice blessing. So hopefully things stabilize but I fear this is all just the beginning.

Glad to hear your Mom is improving and sorry to hear your Dad is having heath issues. You are so right, when it rains it pours. My Mom passed away in April 2014 from cancer and soon after that my Dad was diagnosed with dementia. Last week Dad was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer. I think this is the course for most of us with aging parents. Hang in there - you aren't alone!
