You are absolutely correct Elder Holland, this has gone on for too long. Maybe we should have, like, a worldwide fast or something to help fix it.

To be sure. Looking at the GE site, it looks like there are some safety features to shut down a microwave if it gets too hot. It should not catch fire.

Oh, the story could be true, except for the cause of the fire. My mother had a microwave start on fire, but it had stuff in it. Being empty probably had nothing to do with the fire.
Running the microwave empty just kills the part that creates the microwaves. It causes it to stop making heat. Not catch fire.
