When the Disney movie Frozen was out, Mormon blogger Kathryn Skaggs came to the forefront with a scathing criticism of the movie. Her objection? It was promoting homosexuality. This review brought her to the attention of the LDS General Authorities who appreciated that her thoughts and prejudice mirrored their own. She was appointed to head the counterinsurgency to the Ordain Women movement, with an anti-feminist organization of true obeying women called Mormon Women Stand.
Now the Disney movie Beauty and the Beast is out and it apparently has a deliberate gay moment. Of course, such a moment calls for a strong response from the forces of decency and oppression. A theater in Alabama has already announced they would ban the Disney movie. What shall be the patterned response from the LDS Church? Who knows. However, this presents a chance for another Mormon woman to write or do something outrageous in protest to this movie. If they are off base enough, there is a chance they will be commended to the Brethren for a leadership position in the women's auxiliary forces as a valiant booster of Mormon compliance.
Chance for Mormon Woman leader to emerge?
Chance for Mormon Woman leader to emerge?
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

Re: Chance for Mormon Woman leader to emerge?
Well, I don't know. So many of my friends are squealing with delight about the movie. I thought it funny to learn there's a gay moment in the movie. I'm not excited about the movie, but I want to take a brief side trip down memory lane.
When I was a young, mutual-aged lass, the touring company of A Chorus Line came to town. My young women leaders had decided they would like to take all of us young women to see the show. They knew making arrangements to make this happen would take months of preparation (asking for and getting approval). I know we got permission from the ward. We got permission from our stake leadership. The word came back that, if it was okay with the parents, we could go. Bear in mind, the young women leaders had been very upfront about every possibly objectionable aspect of the show, but felt that the show had a positive enough message that it was a worthwhile young women's activity. Parents gave permission. Stake and ward leaders acquiesced. Tickets were purchased. The whole thing was a go until a few days before the performance. The leadership had found out about the "T & A" song, had found it objectionable and put the kibosh on the whole thing. My young women leaders were bitterly disappointed. It was obvious they were fighting back angry tears. A substitute activity was planned. It was lame, pale and forgettable in comparison.
Back onto the main track of this thread. Personally, I'm not looking forward to this movie, because Beauty And The Beast promotes one of the most dangerous myths out there. That myth is that a woman can change a dangerous man through her love. This is feminism 101 information and I don't understand why the founder of HeForShe is starring in it.
So, I'd be willing to step up and be that person, but I don't think the church would have me, because my objections are the wrong ones.

One of the problems here is that the Gay/Frozen thing ate the Skaggs woman alive. She came across as shrill and ugly. Who wants that gig? Personally I'll be seeing B&B opening weekend. On a side note my LDS high school students all joked that you needed to watch Frozen an even number of times because once turned you gay and twice flipped you back to straight.
Re: Chance for Mormon Woman leader to emerge?
The tragic hilarity of this situation is how this is the only credible way for an LDS woman to become a thought leader in popular culture. They have to be defending standards they did not set.
However, I am interested seeing how the larger Christian community views this movie. We have a minor character who is literally named "The Fool" and is classified as a "bad guy" in this movie. The fact that he is portrayed as "gay" seems like a silly afterthought. Besides, why is anyone trusting Disney Corporation and musical theater for upholding Christian values?
Somewhere there will be a fairly conservative Christian family that takes their children to see and enjoy this movie. They will use the LeFou character as a teaching moment in a way that the liberal community will not appreciate. "Yes, children, LeFou was gay. Now we see what happens to people who make poor choices."
It is inevitable that Disney will eventually produce a brilliant movie where the sympathetic main character is gay. I expect to see something before 2020. This current concern over LeFou will pale in comparison over the furor of this future movie. At that point Kathryn Skaggs (or some believing woman like her) will triumphantly return to public consciousness and proclaim, "See! I told you that Disney had a gay agenda!"

Reading can severely damage your ignorance.
Re: Chance for Mormon Woman leader to emerge?
Imteresting. I have never thought about that before. Most of them, my wife included, seem to be ok with that situation.
