Bill Reels "To Our Loved Ones"

This is for encouragement, ideas, and support for people going through a faith transition no matter where you hope to end up. This is also the place to laugh, cry, and love together.

Bill Reels "To Our Loved Ones"

Post by Abinidied »

Just wondering if anyone has gone so far as to actually share Bills Feb. 13th podcast ("To Our Loved Ones") with their TBM family/friends. I've listened to it a couple of times and see it as an opportunity to point TBMs to a less confrontational/testimony bearing exchange than expected face-to-face. I think Bill could actually play an interesting mediator role that might open the door for some wholesome discussion down the road. I'm too chicken to do it myself right now, but would love to hear others experience if any have tried it.

I really liked what Bill said in that podcast. It uses a slightly shorter format so that the believer in your life gets a very shortened podcast opener rather than the longer song and occasional advertisement that Bill often puts in for the usual podcast. All he addresses is change of belief, not change in behavior. Bill very wisely recommends that the believers don't try to push the usual testimony bearing, scripture reading, fasting, and prayer recommendations. It's a good idea combined with his urging for more open discussion of them in the regular ward meetings.

His solutions are good, but are going to come up short for some. I truly liked what Bill stated and appreciate the balance that he put in his words. I'm not sure it's going to help a couple where the usual LDS "sins" come up like coffee, alcohol, tithing, and Sabbath day observance. But that's probably a bridge too far at this stage.

I have a possible opening to show this to my wife shortly. I plan to attend the Sunstone conference in Phoenix on March 11 and there might be a reason to give this podcast to her if she is opposed to my attendance. We'll see how it goes.

Agreed on all points. All the best and, of course, would love to hear how it went if you get the chance to share it with her. My wife loves Bill. I know that sounds polyandrish, but she was the one who found him when my shelf crashed. She wanted to help me through the crisis thinking it would keep me from leaving. What happened is it brought us onto a level playing field where we could communicate with-out ramping up the volume. A third party in this minefield is so needful in my op. She's still attending and happy nobody knows what she really thinks and I respect that. She knows I'm all blah-blah-blah about letting others know where I stand and she respects that.

I really think Bill nailed it as you say, although I got kind of tangled up in the comment section below the podcast. I loved that he started out tapping into quotes by Jensen and Ballard effectively providing a top-down reason they need to hear it. Bang! Nowhere to go but deeper although, I expect as you do it'll come up short with some TBMs once they get their first glimpse of the 'missing papyri' of the church history. I also like how you pointed out how Bill focused on belief over behaviour. I hadn't thought about it like that so nice insight.

Sunstone sounds fun. I've never been.

Bill is a good guy. I hadn't heard of this before. Thanks.
God is Love. God is Truth. The greatest problem with organized religion is that the organization becomes god, rather than a means of serving God.
