I wonder if this change of tune towards singles is just because they realized that the majority of adults in the church are single. And they want to keep those tithing dollars.

50% of the adults in the Church are unmarried.
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.
