But what if an angel with a flaming sword visits you??2. Caution about revelation for marriage
The following caution from Elder John H. Groberg of the Seventy explains an important principle of seeking divine guidance about whom to marry:
“I would … caution you that you cannot receive a one-sided revelation from God in regards to an eternal marriage. Only as both parties feel the same way can you have the assurance that it is from the Lord. Those who try to force another’s free will into their supposed-revelation mold are doing a great disservice to themselves and to their friends” (“What Are You Doing Here?” New Era, Jan. 1987, 37–38).

This excerpt from the manual gave me a chuckle:

Haha
Leaders, when asking for a member to accept a calling do this exact thing he is saying not to do.
They say they prayed and feel that you should be the next executive custodial foreman.
Me: um no thanks. Thats not for me.
Bishop: but i have the strongest impression about it. Pray about it and call me in a week.
Week later....
Me:
Hey Bishop i prayed and got this ginormous stuper of thought. Especially when i thought about cleaning the skid marks in the toilet bowls.
Bishop:
Are you sure you are getting a good answer? Cause i felt a promting that i cant deny.
Me:
Ya im sure. And im sticking with my stuper of thought on this

That's hilarious. I suppose I am just not sharp enough, but I read stuff like the groberg quote and I think "hey, that's great." Then I read people's comments like yours and think "genius, why could I not have that come to mind?" Maybe with practice...
Re: The funny side of Sunday school - revelation and marriage
Emower I think the further down the rabbit hole I go, the snarkier I get in my head. I can't make these comments in Sunday School so lucky I can come here to get them out. I don't think I will get through a year of D&C without seeing the humour in it.
Re: The funny side of Sunday school - revelation and marriage
20/20hind we could always ask for a revelation about each calling. John Whitmer thought it was the way to go and only agreed to be church historian after getting a "revelation". Funnily enough I asked myself what the worst job in the church would be yesterday, and the building cleaning organizer was at the top of my list. One of the times it pays to be female.

If a TBM doesn't find this both funny and disturbing, they are sick.

God is Love. God is Truth. The greatest problem with organized religion is that the organization becomes god, rather than a means of serving God.

As a young man, I was taught to keep my "flaming sword" under control!LostGirl wrote: ↑Sat Feb 04, 2017 5:26 pm This excerpt from the manual gave me a chuckle:

Re: The funny side of Sunday school - revelation and marriage
Keeping to the original intent of the quote, I'm glad they are making these cautions available to the general membership.
My mother (in her late 50s and divorced) has had a few marriage proposals or dating demands from men who claim that God is speaking to them. She usually just says something like "God is telling me you're a creep".
But we all knew the guy in the single adults who claimed revelation as a way to hit on girls. Wasn't this half the point of the "DeVerl" character in Singles' Ward?
