Selective following the prophets
Selective following the prophets
It has been fascinating and frustrating watching people and their actions during and prior to Covid.
Prophet: be proud to be Mormon. Make I’m a Mormon videos.
TBM: I’ll do whatever you ask prophet.
Prophet: don’t use Mormon anymore. It’s of the devil.
TBM: OK. No more Mormon
Prophet: do home study
TBM: OK. I’ll do it just like you ask
Prophet: fast for Covid
TBM: will do
Prophet: take timeout from social media
TBM: as you wish
Prophet: another fast for Covid
TBM: can’t wait
Prophet: Do indexing
TBM: doing indexing every day
Prophet: wear a mask. It shows love to others.
TBM: Nope. I don’t need to. I’m more special than everyone else
It sounds like many TBMs are on the road to apostasy. Pretty soon, they will be joining us on NOM, then exmo Reddit...

I share the same frustrations. Never been more disappointed in my Mormon affiliation. You lay them out well. I can only believe they have chosen Trump over the prophet.

Re: Selective following the prophets
There was some TBM going around the internet claiming President Nelson never said this about the name Mormon and the devil. Imagine denying the words of his own prophet because they sounded goofy.
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

Re: Selective following the prophets
Except the problem is, the prophet hasn't said what is bolded above. It seems like an easy thing to say, and I agree with it 100%. Maybe the prophet (who was a physician for 40+ years) doesn't understand how a mask could be helpful to stop the spread of disease? Or perhaps he is worried about offending members of the church that might disagree with him. It seems he finds it preferable to have members stay in the church rather than risk offending members with messages encouraging us to love one another.2bizE wrote: ↑Thu Dec 10, 2020 2:08 pm It has been fascinating and frustrating watching people and their actions during and prior to Covid.

The prophet didn't say it but while he was speaking they showed video of someone putting on a mask. That way everybody could come away believing that they are following the prophet without him running the risk of losing the devotion of any of his followers. If you don't believe in masks you go with the for BoM translation art apologetic: that came from the video editor, not the prophet.

These people will wear long underwear even in hot summer climates because the prophet says to, but they won’t wear a mask when outside their house. [emoji2368][emoji2356]

Re: Selective following the prophets
Even as hopeful as this dissidence has made me, it doesn't set the right precedence for the independent thought needed to truly leave the church.
There is nothing inherently wrong with an apostle telling people that wearing a mask is Christlike and shows consideration and duty to your fellow humans. I agree that GOVERNMENT mandates feel despotic and oppressive but if it is God himself putting your focus on charity and conscientious conduct... I don't know. I guess, I understand where the dissent stems from(they feel passionate about the political issue). But if these are TBMs then this is 1. Not some self-serving government trying to control people, this is the authority of God warning His people that they need to wear a mask and 2. It has been framed as an act of sacrifce and love for others. So, I just don't understand why this is the thing they gotta disagree with.

Re: Selective following the prophets
Some time around thanksgiving there was a post (On the Social Medias?) where Dallin F. Oaks recommended distancing, and I think following public health recommendations? I don't remember if he specifically mentioned masks. I'd go searching for it, but the staged photo kind of made me want to puke. Then again, I kind of want to puke every time I see Dallin's smug face.Hagoth wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 8:45 amThey handled this in a very Mormon way.Advocate wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 7:32 amExcept the problem is, the prophet hasn't said what is bolded above.2bizE wrote: ↑Thu Dec 10, 2020 2:08 pm Prophet: wear a mask. Re: Selective following the prophets
These same people are complaining about recommendations to stay socially distant or wear masks as impeding their freedom. Meanwhile, they will scream murder at anyone who proposes legalizing abortion or marijuana. It seems that, to them, it is perfectly fine to restrict agency and freedom so long as it makes them feel more comfortable.
It is the definition of hypocrisy in both directions.

The small stretch in this logic is 1) he Renlund did this under the direction of the prophet 2) Renlund is considered a prophet.Advocate wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 7:32 amExcept the problem is, the prophet hasn't said what is bolded above. Re: Selective following the prophets
Yeah, agreed. When I was TBM there was very small difference in my mind between what a prophet says and what the apostles said. I believed that the prophet talked directly with God and Jesus Christ, just like is implied in Joseph Smith's first vision. There HAD to be a reason why God and Jesus chose him(the prophet) and wasn't showing up to speak to me like that. He was special, a more righteous man, since I also was led to believe that no unclean thing can enter the house of the Lord, thus, he'd need to be up to date on his repentance and his sins would have to be small enough that God could stand to be face to face with this guy. By extension, the apostles who are men in line to become the prophet, were just as righteous and special, except they still only heard God through the same Holy Ghost I supposedly used. But any of those in the line of succession could die or face tragedy, so, ALL of the twelve were seen as equally ready to take on that mantle. I had a slightly less idealized view of any GAs below that. Apostles and prophets speak scripture; GAs speak pleasant quotables.
All the second and third hand accounts I heard of people who met the prophet and apostles led me to believe that these men exuded the warmth of Christ's love and the Spirit could be felt while in their presence. The Spirit could not be felt that way if they weren't righteous enough to have his companionship almost all the time to such an overwhelming degree. Because I was also told that if ever I went into dangerous territory out with bad friends or a place where sin was occurring, the Holy Ghost would abandon me and leave me to fend for myself. If I ever had a naughty thought, I would lose his gentle lingering unless I immediately corrected and repented. So, a guy who people meet and they get smacked in the face with the Holy Ghost? He's got to have willpower beyond my understanding.
So, I do not agree that there is a difference between prophet and apostles. Those Mormons openly criticizing Renlund? That would not have occurred to me as a TBM.

I'm curious (and possibly a slight bit snarky): Did Dale F. Renlund recommend wearing face coverings before, or after he tested positive for COVID-19?
