How does this hashtag stuff work?

I don’t know how this hashtag stuff works. Like #givethanks. I have a few different social media accounts like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and even Tic Tok, but I never use them and I have no idea how they work. I do glance at Facebook once or twice a year, but that is all. I have no idea how using a hashtag does anything...
Anyone else social media illiterate like me?

#hashtags are lines of code you can put in your post. It's sort of a like a search word. If you click on the #hashtag, it takes you to a thread or that is connected to that word. Also, any post that has that hashtag is there, in order of date. So like a #hashtag like #mydrink might take you to a page where everyone is posting about their drink. Or #NBA will take to a thread people are posting about their opinions about the NBA. Say you want to post a journal thread so you include #myjounral2344443 and chances are no one will find it, but it is actually public.

The #givethanks is obviously everyone's gratitude story. It works on most platforms that you see them used.

Hey, thanks for helping out the social media illiterate like me. I use Facebook because my kids all post and keeping up on what they are up to I need to at least read Facebook. We have a family group where they plan things. I know just enough to participate there. I seldom post anything that is not on that group and seldom even wish people happy birthday and if I have to do something like put up a picture, I really struggle. I had no idea how # really worked. I guess I don’t really want to learn about it because I really don’t like it. One of these day I will decide to be the mother in law from hell and insist on phone calls for making plans and hand written thank you notes to acknowledge a gift.

I hear you. I used to know all this stuff. And I still try to make it a point to know it. And you think "wow, this is pretty cool." But then you realize it doesn't add much to your life and isn't really worth the learning curve.

Like I might take a picture and my daughter will say "put it on Instagram."
"I can share a picture a dozen other ways. Why would I use that one?"

They have their reasons.
