What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?

Yikes. Fingers crossed for you Alas!

I'm so sorry, Alas. I hope you can dodge this or it isn't too serious.

Oh no Alas! I'm sorry this is happening. Hopefully it passes by your house. And your husband will be more careful.

Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?
I have someone quite similar in my home too alas. Not out and about "every" day, but close. And another who's working for the government in an office where they should know better, but they don't wear masks in the office. Those are much higher risks than I like to think about or admit. (Hello Cog-Dis.)
We've all remained healthy, but sadly I wouldn't be surprised if my household gets the COVIDZ. I don't have a problem hiding in the basement, but it really won't matter sadly.
Not many of my neighbors seem to care either. Their gatherings might be a bit smaller than other years, but there's no distancing going on, even in the "small" gatherings.
Here's to hoping we all dodge the Virus Bullet. I'm a bit shocked at how the pandemic has gone in the MORmON Corridor, but I wouldn't be surprised either if a bigger peak still shows up in the future.

Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?
But Both of my parents (who are in their late 70's) contracted COVID. My Mother tested positive at the hospital in early April, my father was never tested, although he developed the same symptoms as my mother.
They were uncomfortable and isolated for a couple of weeks with fevers and coughs, but then recovered and have been subsequently cleared by the state health department. They feel as healthy as ever at this point.
I seems like there are a lot of horror stories about COVID-19, lots of stuff to sell advertisements on social media and the news. Its a terrible risk and I am a big advocate for following the guidelines set out by health professionals! That being said, for every death or hospitalization they talk about on the news, there are many, many, cases that simply recover without complication or fan fare.

Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?
On a related note, I am thoroughly confused by my TBM relatives. There appear to be two strongly held positions about COVID:
1. Its all made up, none of it is real, "they" are just trying to take away our rights.
2. This is a sign of the times and the second coming will be happening within two years, like really for sure.
Can anyone explain this to me? These seem to be going in opposite directions, yet this is seriously the running theme among our morridor friends and relatives.

I don't think this is anything specific to the pandemic. When you watch the news they don't have a story about all of the houses that didn't burn down that day, or the people that weren't shot or stabbed.slavereeno wrote: ↑Fri May 22, 2020 9:40 am But Both of my parents (who are in their late 70's) contracted COVID. Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?
This is exactly true, the difference being the vast majority of us will either have to be exposed to the coronavirus or get vaccinated for this to go away, where the vast majority of people will not get shot or stabbed during their lifetime.

Yikes Alas!!! Keep us updated.
One of my friends caught it. She had asthma as a child, so it was super scary. But she recovered at home. She said it was horrible though.

I'm so sorry Alas - hopefully you guys were able to avoid it.
There are so many people that are just itching to get out as much as possible... sadly your husband is not alone.
Fingers crossed you guys don't end up any worse for wear outside of some (or a lot of) worry.

Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?
I actually thought I had posted about our family and the virus, but I never did! So, here's some urban eastern Canadian perspective.
Along with her many anxieties stemming from being a Mormon woman, Sis. M is a germaphobe. The last couple of months have been highly stressful for her, and for our two college aged kids still living at home. Luckily, both these kids have taken advantage of government programs and have collected some money for their schooling, when everything is closed and jobs are scarce. So that's good, but they're bored out of their tree, and Sis M is deathly afraid of letting them go anywhere. So apart from me going to work, and an occasional walk or drive, we've been largely housebound. Which made me realize that we are just boring people. But at least we're safe.
However, there is a middle ground from the Trumpian Republican Mormons on my Facebook feed who think this is all a conspiracy to take away their freedoms and the pure fear that Sis M experiences. Life has to go on, and you can't live in abject fear that a virus is going to kill you, but what's wrong with being careful? When I go out to shop every couple of weeks I put on gloves and a mask, and I'm pretty fortunate that my place of work has less than 5 employees at a time. So I feel pretty safe, no fear, and I don't really miss going out that much. And feeling very grateful that the bills are being paid, and my employer is being a trooper to all their employees during this tough time.
I'm just worried about the second wave that will surely come, and that early openings are going to contribute to more problems. I'm not a Trudeau fan, but I've been appreciative of the largely cautious approach that my country/province has taken. It's kept the death rate very low, much lower than it should be. So I'm grateful, and grateful that Sis M., all my kids and grandkids are safe.

Alas, how are you feeling? Check in....
My daughter and I were tested in a community screening. We are both negative. At this point, I'm bored, tired, lonely, and uncertain about getting out and doing anything. I am debating on buying a major purchase like a truck/ camper/ hot tub or off sheer boredom.

Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?
Sister in laws husband also tested positive. Our friends with serious heart problems tested negative. The people who do testing didn’t require us to come in for testing, but my husband did not mention my lung problems, only age and diabetes. But we are both feeling fine. We might be through our 14 days from exposure because both of us saw her a couple of times while she would have been contagious. But we are waiting the 14 days from her positive test, just to be sure and keep others safe. Because there were those other possible exposures and my husband could have picked it up on days I wasn’t there, because he was less careful than I was. So, we are being maximum precautious. Too many people are Asymptomatic for us to want to expose anyone. I guess except for our next door neighbor who says he doesn’t care we are under quarantine and keep knocking on our door or coming into our back yard when we are outside.Thoughtful wrote: ↑Mon May 25, 2020 5:48 pm Alas, how are you feeling? WTF!?
What's with people? I have seen videos of people confronting strangers in parking lots and yelling at them for wearing a mask because this is 'Merica and you can damned well do whatever you want. Well what if I want to wear a mask, even if it's to protect asshats who want to politicize it? I had a guy show up uninvited at a small service project without a mask but with a mocking grin at those who were wearing masks because, "the jury's still out." He didn't want to help with the project, mind you, he just wanted to get in peoples' faces..

I really don’t understand the getting in people faces about the fact that they are wearing masks. To me, it is the same as the people spitting on others and purposely coughing on them. Why? What do they gain by it?Hagoth wrote: ↑Tue May 26, 2020 9:27 amWTF!?

This neighbor, I don’t have any idea of his political ideas, but it might have more to do with he needs help. He is divorced, estranged from his kids, and very dependent on the neighbors for help......also he has been known to drive after his license was taken away. He is on the wait list to go into the VA nursing home for the beginnings of senility. So, Is it he needs help or doesn’t remember he isn’t supposed to come over, or doesn’t take the virus seriously, or doesn’t even remember there is a virus, or is purposely flaunting the rules about safety? I don’t know, he is a strange guy. But it reaches the point where we can’t do anything but remind him. We help him when he needs something.
Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?
Glad to hear you're doing ok alas.
I just hope humanity can prevail and people can come together in times like this.
Yet it feels more divisive then ever. Coke vs Pepsi. BYU vs Utah. Now masks vs unmasked.
Human stupidity has no bounds.

Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?
This is what's driving me nuts more than anything at the moment methinks.
We humans are fighting an invisible enemy that's killing us; You'd think we could figure out a way to come together as humanity with a common goal.
But we politicize everything and blame "everyone else" for everything, etc. etc.
Yep, we're idiots.
