No, make that -10,000.
And, thus, new doctrine and new history has just been born.

It just occurred to me that this might be an attempt to harmonize the accounts. The most prevalent theme across all of them is forgiveness, but it isn't in the 1838 account at all.

I wouldn't, because-technically-it wasn't during conference itself.

It probably is, but it's still a terrible teaching.

It's absolutely terrible. How is it different from current doctrine, though? From what I can tell, it's only an anachronism.

It's also terrible apologetics, if that's what it is. Joseph Smith was forgiven without restoring or joining the Only True and Living Church, if I remember the earliest account correctly.

But in zero of them was he told he "had to find the true church to gain forgiveness." That's a downright lie. "Join none of them" does not mean "I can't forgive you unless you find the true church." In fact, there was no true church for him to join. And, in fact, God does not need a church to forgive people. That's a stupid reason to join a church imo.

P.S. I just remembered that (join the true church to gain forgiveness) was the basis for our missionary work when I went on a mission forty years ago. The fact that I now think that's stupid shows how much I have changed.
