What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?
Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?
Weird. Where I live in the UK, people don't seem to be panic-hoarding. This evening, the canned goods aisle and boxed milk section at Tesco were sparse, but that seems to be it. People are just being cautious.
We mostly get our groceries delivered, which is a huge thing here. Preparation for self-isolating has consisted of getting 25% more in the deliveries than usual for the last few weeks. Grocery deliveries will keep going even in quarantine conditions, though. There are protocols in place for delivering to a house with infected inhabitants.
The government isn't going to close the schools until the virus peaks, to keep from depressing the economy more than necessary and to reduce self-isolation fatigue. There are plans to expand hospital capacities if necessary. On the BBC web site, every coronavirus article is accompanied by a smart infographic on slowing the spread, what to do if you think you're infected, or what stage we're at in the response and what happens next. The general strategy for dealing with an epidemic that's being enacted now has been developed over the last decade.

Fascinating. I'm hearing anger from other UK friends who feel the PM is basically resigned to letting the weak die and then moving on, in the name of herd immunity.Reuben wrote: ↑Sat Mar 14, 2020 6:19 pm Weird. Maybe the Brits don't thrive on drama to the degree Americans do.

Oh, I don't know. They got Big Brother the same time we did, and their tabloids are hilariously histrionic.
I would say stoicism and orderliness are strong cultural values. English people in particular will automatically queue up when a large group has to wait for something. "Keep a stiff upper lip" came from here.

It will be over 6k in 3 days then 12k by next week. This is serious stuff. Reality is there’s probably more untested people walking around with would be confirmed cases if the US was testing.

People on all sides are still really sore about Brexit, and a lot of Johnson's current opponents hated him long before he was PM. Among the UK left, he and his government can do nothing right. I don't think he has the influence over the UK's response that some ascribe. He's more like a scapegoat or an annoying pressure valve. Someone you can righteously love to hate, like Trump.

My workplace just shut down for 3+ weeks. I'm "on call" and a meeting on Tues. Paid vacation, basically rn.
Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?
I changed my mind. I'm totally looking forward to the first F and T meeting back in church, because I'm going to bear my testimony about this.^^^^

Yes, as long as that means China did not just give up on reporting new cases.

Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?
Just a reminder: the common flu has killed 46,000 Americans so far this season. With the current mindset, people would be exchanging gunfire with their neighbors over toilet paper if coronavirus deaths were anywhere near those numbers. So far the only first-hand accounts of violence I have heard were fist fights over toilet paper, and that's in Utah where no one has died from coronavirus. Meanwhile 1500 Utahns (based on recent statistics) will have died this season from the flu/pneumonia.

In addition to toilet paper, Americans have been stockpiling guns and ammo.

I suspect that a roll of toilet paper makes a passable silencer.

Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?
I don’t think this comparison is valid considering we don’t know the full extent of the coronavirus “season”. This seems more contagious and is spreading faster. Has the world ever been shut down before for the flu?Hagoth wrote: ↑Mon Mar 16, 2020 8:37 am Just a reminder: the common flu has killed 46,000 Americans so far this season. The asymptomatic people can carry and infect others at high rates that impact the elderly.
This seems drastically different. Utah could see 1500+ people die from this before April 30th if the numbers follow the curve. Hopefully people there can quarantine and shelter down.

You're right, but I hear so many people acting like this is the bubonic plague I have taken it upon myself to sprinkle little reminders here and there.

I don't know what age this photo of Elder Holland shopping at Costco in sunglasses is, but the commentary sure is funny:
