I know what my mother expects. I know what she's saying in her prayers. She'd rather have me come home dead than unclean.

I'm not saying that you can understand it any better now, but the teachings are pretty clear. The church was pretty consistent in teaching that it is better to have dead children than immoral ones. It's pretty awful. I don't think the church leaders ever meant to say that masturbation is the sin next to murder, but they taught enough that people concluded it was.
