Praising the Mormon People

Post by moksha »

When we talk about the Church and its doctrines, we sometimes overlook and even more important part: The individual members.

I would like to bear my testimony as to the kindness and generosity shown by those members toward myself and others. Mormons can shine at any given moment through their acts of beneficence as well as any group of people. Sometimes we feel down about what transpires within the Church, but we can love the Mormons (no matter what names we choose to call ourselves from year to year).
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

I have to agree. The people in my ward are incredibly kind and loving.

I would agree also.

But contrary to popular opinion among church leadership, the generosity and clean living manner of the Mormon people is not a sign that the church is true. There are plenty of great people out there who are not LDS.

Does that mean their belief system is true as well??? ;)

People are amazing. Mormons are amazing. I think part of this is that their belief system requires them to constantly take stock of their lives and actions. The important things for them include helping others, paying tithing, not drinking coffee, going to the temple, attending lots of meetings... Only one of those things is really important in the big picture and Mormons do it way better than, say, Westboro Baptists who also have a list of things that they are required to do to be good Westboro Baptists.

I golf with the Bishop of my ward so I know him quite well. He and I are both converts of the same age and circumstances, and we both agree that members can be a bit weird. In my case before I joined the Church I said that I did so in spite of the members.

This isn't to say that there aren't lots of kind and loving members. For example my wife is perfect. Its just that some of our doctrines tend to twist people's thinking into doing some horrible and not so horrible things. For example I watched a former Bishop do something that was highly offensive. When I called him on his bad behaviour he said that he knew it would be offensive but he hoped he would be forgiven. Who in their right mind does something bad and thinks that this is okay because it will all work out in the next life? In my experience that would be a lot of Mormons.

I just wish these type of Mormons would read Moroni's teachings on how to discern good from evil. It would make Church a better place for all.

All the best,
Bob

To turn the tables on a phrase that many mormons like to use:
(Most of) The mormon people are true.

The mormon "church" is not.
