Utah Homework Assignment

Post by StarbucksMom »

This showed up on my newsfeed this morning. Comments are all about how Mormonism is a misogynistic religion, no defenders or apologetic comments. Unbelievable that this was homework.

Is there a corresponding assignment for boys? How demeaning to have a bunch of conflicting, often bad advice from a random collection of teenage boys be assigned as homework . So gross.

Wow, just wow.

I'm glad they are getting this out there though.
Oxborrow, who is the executive director of the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition, said lessons that reinforce male entitlement and gender norms can have serious consequences. She noted that the highly conservative state has high rates of domestic violence and teenage suicide.
Very good point.

I get it, it's promoting outdated gender stereotypes when we know better. However many of the guidelines are common decency. Some guidelines need to be updated

I don't believe this should be an uproar and humiliate the teacher. But without a little uproar it might not be enough to initiate change.

Yes, the boys got a sheet also:
Utah dating homework wrote:The boys’ worksheet further said, “At a restaurant, say what you’re going to order so she will have a guide in ordering”, “Girls like flowers and little gifts”, “chew with your mouth closed”, “no gross noises” and “Don’t comment or be concerned with how much she is or isn’t eating”.
I will openly admit that I have told more than a few teenage boys on scouting trips, "don't spend money on someone else's wife" as well as "having a girlfriend in high school is largely a waste of time and money." I also was amused by this statement:
Jenn Oxborrow, executive director of the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition wrote:“This can contribute to really dangerous and unhealthy relationships,” she said, adding, “It’s completely non-inclusive and completely insensitive.”
I have to disagree with her on some levels. Dating is inherently non-exclusive and is often insensitive, especially if a teenager is going on far fewer dates than that teenager desires. With that, I will bow out of this conversation.
