I just caught some of Bednar's talk- I think he may be inadvertently encouraging a lot of "uncorrelated" learning and personal revelation.

I bumped into a member of the ward last night who asked what I thought of the missionary change. Since I have not listened to much of conference I wasn't sure what they were talking about. They claimed the duration for boys is now a choice between 18 and 24 months. Was this actually announced, or are they just parroting a rumor?

No changes to missions. Still no coffee

What strikes me a lot about this is that, after all this time that I have been away from it, these talks are all exactly the same type of thing they were before I left. It's all rehash and basic stuff. "Don't talk about what happens in temples", is a talk that's been done innumerable times, and yet here we are. (Perhaps if it wasn't so secretive, er "sacred", this wouldn't be an issue.)

Also, having been away from hear these talks for years, I'm reminded very much that there definitely is a certain cadence to the way that most of them speak during conference. Maybe it's supposed to be kind of hypnotic? Who knows, but it's a weird affectation that only serves to distance them even more from the message that they are, or should be, trying to give.
