For me, the only reason I’m Mormon is because some relative back in the 1800s was deceived and joined the church.
I recognize the church has been an influence for good in many areas of my life, but now wish it was not so much a part of my life now.
I wish the church were just a prep church and then people would be free to leave to spread their wings...rather than being a life long kult.
Why are you mormon?
Re: Why are you mormon?
Dad + Mom + Temple Marriage + Garment Covered Sex = Mormon RR
I've come to terms with my
Mormonism in a healthy way.
I was once in the third grade. Then I grew up and moved on to bigger and better things in life. I look back in fondness.
The church provided shelter and a safe path in a world fraught with bad people, false wisdom, fake news, and walking pornography.
The church provided life, liberty, and the pursuit of a young wife by the age of 21. It provided a path, guidance, and never ending chastity lessons that prevented me from having hairy palms, a blind left eye, homosexuality, and raunchy weekend sex with ferrets.
The church provided the way, the truth, and the life, to return to god again through obedience to the Prophet of God. The church is my salvation and eternal life!
The church provided an excuse to be narrow minded, judgmental, and preachy. The very fibers that make one uptight, anxious, and depressed are all a result of membership in Mormonism.
The church provided a whitewashed narrative, a faithful story, a cover up of the greatest crap sandwich made by a 14 year old boy with a rock collection.
My disbelief in the church opened my eyes to a big beautiful world full of people that think, act, and live differently than I do.
I'm Mormon because... I haven't walked out of my marriage, ditched my family, and most importantly because I'm still learning how NOT to be.

Re: Why are you mormon?
Born on the rusty old dinghy but sure as hell ain't dying on it! Once I jumped over the edge I found the water was warm and shallow, a beautiful turquoise tropical blue with soft white sand. Someone handed me a margarita and invited me onto the beach where I laid in the sun, listened to the waves and tropical birds and enjoyed every weekend. Sometimes I would think back to all those years of getting seasick on the old dinghy, forever trying to see a horizon that never came into view, trying to plug all the holes in the bottom of the boat, feeling like I was going to lose my mind in boredom.

Re: Why are you mormon?
At this point, it may be mostly because I am resistant to change and I can't imagine not identifying as Mormon (at least in an abstract/tribal sense).
Also, not wanting to deal with the potential consequences of drifting any further than I have outwardly (damage to relationships that I value).
That said, my activity is almost entirely on my own terms these days. I don't think that will last forever, but it's lasted a lot longer than I expected it to without a situation in which I feel impelled to reveal my heterodoxy.
