Will the temples get built?

This is for encouragement, ideas, and support for people going through a faith transition no matter where you hope to end up. This is also the place to laugh, cry, and love together.

Will the temples get built?

Post by Hagoth »

7 new temples were announced in April and 12 more this week. It's not like they built those 7 temples in the intervening 6 months so they had to announce new ones. My questions are:

-How long does it take to build a temple after it's been announced?
-How many are under construction at a given time?
-How long will it take to actually build all 19 of these temples?
-Will they keep announcing them at this rate?
-Is this president Nelson doing a bit of grandstanding in his campaign to be the gettin'-stuff-done prophet?

My opinion is they will get built, eventually. Probably.

But the standard for announcing a temple has changed. Previously, a temple wasn't announced until they were basically ready to break ground. Then earlier to when they purchased land. Now they announce it once they have a general idea where they hope to do it.

Goalpost moving to create interest in vague ideas.

From MORMON Newsroom
https://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/ ... conference
...announced plans to build 12 new temples. In addition to this being the largest number of temples ever announced on the same day, the news brings the total number of Latter-day Saint temples operating, announced or under construction to 201. This comes exactly 18 years to the week since the Church completed its 100th temple.
They are trying to make it sound really cool like there is some arbitrary significance to relative dates.

EDIT:

Also, from everything we know, the COB is made of many Governors, Dukes, Princes and Lords - each building their own mini-kingdom. The temple construction department is no different. While I can only speculate, I imagine the minions in this department are as busy as ever trying to justify their existence to literally build their reward in heaven.

This reminds me of politics so much - they will announce programs to get the base fired up, knowing there is no way that it will get done in the announced format.

But it doesn't matter, because it keeps your followers thinking that progress is happening quickly.

And, to me, the biggest thing of all that drives me nuts is that it's called revelation to announce temples when in reality all it takes to build temples is money, and the church has possibly hundreds of billions of dollars in net worth.

"Well we can't talk about church growth anymore, forget about all that past talk about the mountain and the rolling stone...but, TEMPLES!"

This narrative works. My TBM mom brought it up last weekend as evidence the Lord continuing to accelerate his work through an inspired corporate leader. She's a bit on the last days apocalyptic conspiracy side of things, smack in the middle of the boomers. It will be interesting to see if most millennials buy into this temple building as enough evidence of authenticity, especially where growth can't be used anymore.
