“The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square” is a pretty good name, particularly compared with the directive to use the full name of the institutional church. "The Restored Church of Jesus Christ" does not roll off the tongue like "Mormon".

Since "Motab" is now not accurate, I suppose that "T-Cats" is now the diminuitive that I will start using around believers. Ironically, the composition of T-Cats is mostly the Persian and Turkish Angora white variants. There are a few Tabbys and Siamese, but not too many Bombay or exotic black cats. But we can always expect to see a few hairless cats among the Tenor and Bass sections.

Isn't this kind of ridiculous?

It's almost an assumption that the entire world knows what "tabernacle" and what "temple square" you're talking about....

It's a lot like saying, "Let's go listen to the tree choir at the library".

The Tabernacle Choir at Temple square could easily be a Jewish choir in New York City....

They love the name of the church so badly, they should just live with it.

"The Choir of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" is where they need to be on this.

Too wordy? Too bad...eat it till you love it.

T-Cats.

For all you cats out there, don't google that website while at work.

This. Talk about a bad corporate decision. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir was a well established brand with years of effort going into its establishment. And this does nothing to establish the brand they're wanting to promote, namely the official trademark name of the ChINO.

Whenever I see a decision this irrational I try to find the perspective from which it makes sense . That usually reveals a lot about what is driving the decision makers. In this case it seems to show that they are more worried about escaping the negative connotations of "Mormon" than they are about establishing a positive association with Christ. What a revelation :o

They are going to trade in their brand name recognition for RMN’s little tantrum about what people call us? Is he out of his ever loving mind. That is like Jello deciding to call itself the First Gelatin Desert. Sure, it might not be a terrible name, but brand recognition...150 years of brand recognition.

Anyone know what Phillip Morris calls itself these days?

Re-branding dumps the negative consequences of a corporation behaving badly!

Personally I'm happy to see this get renamed. It shows RMN is 100% serious about rebranding and not just in name only.

Next up, Brand uniforms will have to change. Here's what's coming next:

✔️ No more "Mormon" missionaries. Normal clothes from now on.

✔️ No more "Mormon underwear". Normal underwear from now on

✔️ No more "Book of Mormon". Call it the book of scripture revealed by the Lords Prophets @ North America.

Hopefully RMN can live another 10 years to fully destroy the Mormon brand and move the church into the 21st century!

You know, Joseph kind of left them with this legacy of a dead chicken hanging around their neck. I don't think they are going to rid themselves of it anytime soon...

Oh Gods Yeesss^^^

T-cats is making me laugh. I've heard Tab-Cats too-which is also funny! Also well done to those of you who predicted a MoTab name change.

I think he is. Wow. So. So. So. Dumb.

You have to ask yourself....what is RMN trying to run away from?? Why is he so afraid of the word Mormon? Why is he ashamed of it when GBH basically said "what the Hell, let's just embrace our nickname and make it a name associated with good"???

It's such a waste of capital and that doesn't even get into what a bad marketing decision it is to rebrand after this long.

And the thing is that RMN was hinting at this before he was prophet, so it's clearly just a personal preference that he finally now has the power to enforce, which also in a small way says it's not just about the negative connotation with the term Mormon.

I'm sure part of it is because of the research/surveys/polls they done, but clearly RMN wanted to do it long ago and now is just going for it.

Which makes me think that he's not above making some other really stupid moves like canonizing the proc to the family. I am hoping he does it, because it will force a lot of members who are holding on by a thread to face some tough realizations about this church ever being accepting. Right now everyone loves these small cosmetic changes he's making, but he clearly is looking to shake things up and I can only hope he takes it too far.

I am enjoying that (what appears to be a majority of) TBMs, NOMs and EXMOs all think this is stupid.

I did read a few “so inspired!” comments but they were definitely in the minority.

Motab will probably still stick as the name we all know. TabSquare sounds like a reasonable replacement :D :D :D

In order for the faith to mature we need to get to a place where more and more orthodox members can think and say out loud that they think something a church leader said is stupid.

I admit I'm impressed with RMN. He is a leader. He knows how to make change, and make it quick. His revelations have been superficial, but he is an agent of change. I hope many more things change for the better.

Actually he reminds me of other leaders I have known who fail to understand the difference between leaving their mark and actually making progress. So far I am seeing a lot of the former, little or none of the latter.

I think this just goes to show how incapacitated Thomas S. Monson was.
