Kirby: Five kinds of ex-Mormons

Post by moksha »

Five Kinds of ex-Mormons

1. Blissed-ex • This first type of ex-Mormon refers to members who were never really Mormon in the first place. We're talking members of record who were born Mormon, or made Mormon before they had an adult say in the matter, or were baptized in order to play baseball with some dimly remembered Americans in white shirts.

2. Kleen-ex • This is the next-best kind of ex-Mormon. They simply just left and got away clean. They have healthy relationships with friends and loved ones who remained Mormon, and are fine talking about the church in a respectful and reasonable way.

3. Spand-ex • Things get a little trickier with ex-Mormons in this category. Although gone, they still feel oppressed enough to push back.

4. Con-ex • The church has lied and can't be forgiven. Like the newly divorced, these ex-Mormons have a hard time letting go without having the final say in a situation where they feel conned.

5. Gas-ex • Full-on, hardcore raving ex-Mormons. So consumed by outrage over whatever the church has done to them, they've turned fighting it into a cottage industry or even a full-time job with "web shites" and flog blogs.

Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

Spand-ex, bordering on Kleen-ex. If my mother would just stop pushing religion down my throat. ;)

Moksha, you are a treasure! :) I'm a bit of a Spandex. I still want to talk about seer stones and the real church history in Gospel Doctrine class, when I go. I'm hoping next year's class will be more open, but I'm not holding my breathe.
God is Love. God is Truth. The greatest problem with organized religion is that the organization becomes god, rather than a means of serving God.

Same here, 2bixE. I find myself on Kirby's first list of five kinds of Mormons. Used to be downright lonely in that position (it is still very much a minority position), but more members seem to be drifting to this spot.

Fed-Ex - those who left because they got fed up with the lies, the history, the controlling culture and the meaningless rituals.

PS: I probably fit in the Kleen-ex category - I made a quick and clean break and I'm at peace with my friends who are church members. Since I don't have family in the church, that was never an issue.

However, I don't agree with him that speaking up when we hear misinformation equates to being a jerk. When the opportunity is right (meaning I know the person I am speaking to will listen), I will bring up factual information that can be found on the church website. I don't think it is right or honest to listen to misinformation (such as it JS having only one wife, or polyandry didn't exist, or that it was common for 14-year-old girls to get married back then) without bringing forth the truth.
