Pendelum shifts away from Mormon

Post by Dravin »

Looks like after having invested all that time and money into the "I'm a Mormon" campaign Jesus has decided he doesn't like it: https://www.mormonnewsroom.org/style-guide

I wonder if we're going to be seeing a rush of Wikipedia edits as the faithful (and possibly paid) rush forth to try and enforce the style guide. I've already seen one individual change their Twitter handle.

This comes out every 10, 15 years. Unfortunately for the Church "Mormon" always sticks. I remember this same release in 1985 when I was shooting news for an ABC affiliate.

The church has always had a branding problem with its name. Like those 4 years in the 1830s when it had to abandon the name of Jesus Christ because so many other frontier restoration sects already claimed "the church of Jesus Christ". They were forced to go contrary to the BOM and just simplify to "the church of latter day saints".

Interesting.

The announcement was made on mormonnewsroom(dot)org

Will they be getting rid of mormon(dot)org? I'm sure they'll let that name go for nothing so someone else can use it for their website!

How 'bout the "I'm a mormon" campaign? Is everyone going to re-record their testimonkey videos?

Will they re-name the "Meet the mormons" movie that they made such a big deal about?

How 'bout all those cease-and-desist letters that they like to send out to folks who aren't using the word mormon correctly?

Maybe they should have Kirton|McKonkie write up a "Proclamation on Trademarks™ and Branding" and the 1st Prezidency can sign their names to it and canonize it.

What a complete joke. Good old Russ Nelson has been granted infinite power and wisdom from Elohim™, and this is what he comes up with? There's no other problems in the world that he could focus on, the most important thing for mormon god's mouthpiece is to tell the world how they should refer to his only true and living Corporation™. Modern Revelation indeed!!!

Like others have said: This comes around every few years, but changes nothing.

Edit: I can't believe I missed mentioning: Mormon Tabernacle Choir! I can't wait until the re-brand that to: ???

Or: Mormon helping hands.

I'm not so sure Russ really thought this one through...

They could start calling the MoTabs the Restored Gospel Choir, but then millions would be disappointed to learn it was a group of 300+ middle-aged white people who are trying to look happy while singing syrupy arrangements of hymns while trying not to arouse the ire of Mac by allowing vibrato in their voice.

Let's start from the top and get these all correct, shall we?

It is the "I'm even a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" campaign. Jesus wanted a refresh. It was important to His vision for his Even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints SEO strategy.
dogbite wrote: Thu Aug 16, 2018 2:51 pm What is poor mormonhub to do?
It is now EvenTheChurchofJesusChristofLatterDaySaintshub. Please don't claim the domain so Even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints can grab it before some cyber squatter charging an outrageous fee.

The next ones will take a bit more explaining...
wtfluff wrote: Thu Aug 16, 2018 4:35 pm The announcement was made on mormonnewsroom(dot)org
Already in process. Now EvenTheChurchofJesusChristofLatterDaySaintsNewsroom.org
wtfluff wrote: Thu Aug 16, 2018 4:35 pm Will they be getting rid of mormon(dot)org? I'm sure they'll let that name go for nothing so someone else can use it for their website!
No. They will keep it to redirect to EvenTheChurchofJesusChristofLatterDaySaints.org
wtfluff wrote: Thu Aug 16, 2018 4:35 pm How 'bout the "I'm a mormon" campaign? Is everyone going to re-record their testimonkey videos?
As mentioned above, a bit more complicated but remember It is now the "I'm even a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" campaign. Jesus said so.
wtfluff wrote: Thu Aug 16, 2018 4:35 pm Will they re-name the "Meet the mormons" movie that they made such a big deal about?
Sadly yes. That said, everyone will be able to turn their old DVD's in for a $1.00 credit towards the purchase price of the new ones that will be available for repurchase for $24.99. New title "Meet Even the Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints"

Remember your style guide...now refer to "the true and living Corporation, Even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints"
wtfluff wrote: Thu Aug 16, 2018 4:35 pm Edit: I can't believe I missed mentioning: Mormon Tabernacle Choir! I can't wait until the re-brand that to: ???
I am guessing for consistency they will go with "Even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Tabernacle Choir"
wtfluff wrote: Thu Aug 16, 2018 4:35 pm Or: Mormon helping hands.
Likely to be "Even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Helping Hands". Shirts will remain yellow, but be oversized for all in order to accommodate the additional wording required.
Palerider wrote: Thu Aug 16, 2018 9:38 pm Hey....I wonder what I'm supposed to call that book written by Bruce R. McConkie?

You know....M****n Doctrine...!?!? 😋
Thinking it will be "Even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Doctrine". Deseret Book will be using this chance to get the newly titled edition out very soon, and will encourage everyone with those old first editions to toss them in favor of the correct terminology (and to further bury the McConkie crazy...).

Sorry. Has this been too much "Even"? Seriously...I can't even stop laughing about it!

How about 'The Church Formerly Known as Mormon.' That pretty much solves it, right? Has all the required elements, does not call the church 'Mormon' and says 'The Church' and everyone will know which church you mean...And much shorter abbreviation.

Sadly, would have to be "Even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, formerly known as Mormon". Too long.

Maybe Even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints should go all "Prince" on us and just use a symbol? Then no one could google it and find out all the problems...

Someone just pointed this out on r/exmormon and I thought I'd share it here:
The term "Mormonism" is inaccurate and should not be used. When describing the combination of doctrine, culture and lifestyle unique to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the term "the restored gospel of Jesus Christ" is accurate and preferred.
They lumped culture in with the restored gospel, if taken to heart (it won't be) that means you can't just throw the culture under the bus anymore without throwing part of the gospel under the bus. This means when talking about the institutionalized racism of the church in say 1970 one can, according to the above quote, accurately talk about how the restored gospel of Jesus Christ was racist.

I think the response to this announcement that the church should be concerned about now is that people will shorten the popular name of the church even further by leaving out the second M.

According to the style guide, even using the acronym LDS is a no-no. All this lunacy can accomplish is to make "Mormon" and "LDS" sound like derogatory terms to the over-sensitive ears of members of the church, adding yet another unnecessary Lego brick to their persecution complex. If the church keeps pushing on this members will eventually be bristling every time they hear a non-member use the word Mormon, because there's no way in hell the rest of the world is going to start calling it "the Restored Church of Jesus Christ."

I suggest a more accurate name than that too-long one with Jesus Christ lurking in the middle of it. How about Josephites? Or more accurately, Brighamites. I realize neither of those are serious options but I can think of one person who might consider Nelsonites.

I wonder if this is at least part of trying to take attention away from negative criticism in the media lately.

With the "Believer" documentary out now, Sam Young's protests, and other gay rights issues, they have been getting a lot of extra negative press lately. By trying to get everyone to talk about their name, they are not taking about the other issues with the church for a while.

"The Church of Jesus Christ" so...

The Church of Jesus Christ is a Christian religious denomination headquartered in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, United States.[1][2] The Church of Jesus Christ is a Restorationist church and is historically part of the Latter Day Saint movement. It has sometimes been referred to as a "Bickertonite church" or "Rigdonite organization"[3] based upon the church's claims of succession through William Bickerton and Sidney Rigdon.

Why is this even an issue?

Public perception of mormons is actually very negative.

So let's rebrand. Use a different name. No one will notice and our polls will go up.

Now that's a prophet for you. //sarcasm//

That tears it. We have to change the forum name to

"New Order Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saintses". NOCoJCoLDSs for short.

Catchy, no? Remember to use the correct font, please.

When referring to people or organizations that practice polygamy, it should be stated that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not affiliated with polygamous groups.
Furthermore, if pressed on the subject regarding the similarities between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and people or organizations that practice polygamy, it should be stated that such parties worship a different Joseph Smith.

It's also quite (even?) humorous that a derogatory quote about polygamy comes from a guy who basically bragged about being a "celestial polygamist" in the afterlife during one of his speeches at the last Corporate Convention.

One of the local news stations in the belly of the beast showed at least 3 conference talks where this attempt at re-branding has happened in the past. Seems one of the octogenarians gets on this kick every ~10 years or so since the 80's. Is Russ the only one to step it up to "revelation" so far?

They actually questioned a non-member, non-resident in the street and his reply was hilarious. Basically: Nobody cares.
