Guess who the new GD teacher is in our ward?
ME! Just called a few weeks ago and I actually accepted. Never taught it before, ever.
First lesson last Sunday went pretty well. The next one is going to be more difficult, about the "mantle" of prophets. I'm teaching every other week, so that should help me recover better before teaching the next one.
Anyway, I may need to vent here more if things get difficult.

That's awesome. Having a good, well crafted lesson and discussion really makes church better for everyone. Good luck!

Awesome! I'm glad the first one went well, I'm sure you will do a great job! GD teacher can be fun, hopefully having to nuance your way thru it won't be too bad.

Your ward is lucky. You are brave. I would have a hard time biting my tongue or not changing topics completely some weeks.

Guess who? Someone who said yes when they should have said no.

I'm curious to hear what/how you'll be teaching and how long you can get away with it. Good luck!

That was one of my last callings and I loved it. I especially enjoyed asking good social science questions. Kind of like the Columbo technique. Lots of "I wonder, Why is That?" and then let them try to answer the crazy stuff. Most of the time there really are no right answers.
I hope you enjoy it!

We certainly wish you well. It's clear that you are not my Gospel Doctrine instructor and so I have to keep my mouth shut for so many things they say.

A ice goal would be to work in at least one lesser known truth into each lesson. .Maybe a.few trivia questions to start the lesson.
ie.What were the names of Joseph Smith's 13 year old.brides?
Who was known for his use of divining rods?

Thanks everyone! I was actually hesitant to accept the calling. Partly because I loved teaching the 13 year old sunday school class, and partly because I'm not sure how I will cover some topics.

Yes, we'll see. My first lesson I focused on what are the qualities of a good leader. I had people read from some Ted talks (idea from Mormon Sunday School podcast), then had the class come up with their ideas. Then, we read the basic scriptures from the story, what makes a good leader and compared it to the Ted talks and the class ideas.

Yes it is. I don't need disrespect. To often these calls are used to try to manipulate the teacher though.Deepthinker wrote: ↑Wed Aug 01, 2018 12:14 pmYou may be right. No matter what happens it is my journey, and I'll learn something from it.

I understand, I'm sure there are those who are called for that reason. I don't believe it is like that in my case.dogbite wrote: ↑Wed Aug 01, 2018 12:23 pmYes it is. I don't need disrespect. Another tack you could take with this would be to denounce the need for leaders. Our internal compass should be our leader and we should trust it to guide us away from people who seek to be leaders.Deepthinker wrote: ↑Wed Aug 01, 2018 12:17 pmYes, we'll see.
