Just what exactly is the gathering of Israel? I was a TBM/went to BYU/served a mission, and even went to study abroad in Israel. And I still have no clue what that really is.

-Preparing for the second coming?
-starting to gather the saints to go to Missouri?
-move to Israel and share the gospel?? (it was made VERY clear to us when we went to Israel that we were NOT allowed to proselyte at all.)

I also remember once as a SS teacher the lesson was on the tribes of Israel, and I read, re-read, re-read, etc the lesson and scriptures and I just did not get what in the Hell the lesson was talking about. So I admitted that to my (adult Gos Doct) class on Sunday and just made up my own lesson.

Yes--I was about to ask this same thing. Lifetime of active membership, and I have no clue what this actually means.

Going to that site and reading the BITE stuff just scared the hell out of me. I am having a panic attack. I want the hell out!

I'm telling you - it's downright scary when you read it after you're out... and then think of how it's still controlling those you love. And I look at that graphic going over each part of BITE and it's like "I NEED TO SAVE THEM" but you know you can't because no one still being taken in by it trust you enough to even consider what you're saying could be true.

It's the most helpless feeling, and once you're out you can see it so clearly which makes it all the more painful that no one trusts you enough. Maybe that's just how I feel, but it's tough.

No you are not the only one! This is exactly how I feel, when you suggest they look at this kind of stuff they feel attacked and put you in the Satan bucket.

The gathering of Israel
What does even mean anymore? Now, I get that the so-called gathering of Israel is one key component to usher in the 2nd coming, but why does it even matter anymore? Roughly 4,000 years ago an extended family moves further away from each other (and since they took a social media fast) they didn't keep in touch. About 2,000 years later they are mentioned about the time Jesus died and was supposed to return.

So, in today's world, with DNA & known human migration patterns, why is the "gathering of Israel" still a thing? To me it is just one more chink in the armor that it's all made up and JS was simply echoing the thoughts in the bible. As a nation (Jewish people?) Israel has never been stronger. Does anyone in Israel claim to come from a certain tribe, the way we do in our P-blessings? How on earth are LDS youth expected to "gather Israel". I guess TBMs like the way it sounds but do any of them comprehend what it is supposed to mean? Mormons seem to think 'we' are Israel but the Jewish people sure as hell wouldn't agree.

It's still all so damn weird.

Methinks at this point that RMN referring to "The Gathering of Israel" simply means: Missionary Work.

It's just a fancy way of saying: WE NEED MORE PEOPLE TO PAY TITHING!

I agree but like with all things LDS, the meanings of words and phrases change considerably as time goes by. At one point the gathering was a literal gathering of the lost 10 tribes. Now it's just missionary work.

Like the New & Everlasting Covenant was polygamy, now it's just temple marriage.

Both are huge changes in what they mean.

^^This. When I asked my 13yo how the fireside went and what they talked about her answer was "missionary work, I think."
