The church always responds to social pressure. This updated post is just one more example of it. They may be late, they may drag their feet, they may fight against it, but time after time, they do move to align with what the rest of society deems good . Often it is disengenuous, but they'll say what they think society wants, eventually.
They're not leaders. They're not courageous. They're like insecure bullies who are the last ones making fun of someone until they turn around and realize nobody else thinks it's cool to pick on the little guy anymore. They then try to act like the little guy's best friend, but the problem is, they're always the last one.
I've maintained church leadership as cowards for quite some time now.
Their problem is (seriously) that they receive zero DIRECT revelation as they claim and are slow to hearken to the small light that they do receive.
This creates fear or the very opposite of faith.
They fear God will not support them with His strong arm or the 2nd Coming if they stick with the past traditions; (polygamy, priesthood ban.)
And they won't survive as a growing, prosperous church if they don't jettison the old revelations. Instead they would become a laughing stock. Just try to imagine still practising polygamy and banning African Americans at this point in history. Their convert pool would be drawn from skin heads and white supremacists. No decent, intelligent person would join them in this day and time.
The church would have splintered and shrunk into insignificance like the FLDS movement. Just a small bunch of greedy, power-hungry, devious, corrupt, manipulative and weird white guys.
Hmmm....Anyway...
Mormon leadership, tacitly and quietly rejecting their past revelation was a matter of survival not inspiration. I really don't see what all the hew and cry is about in defending the great Joseph Smith. The truth (the real unspoken truth) is that they rejected and cast him and his "revelations" aside long ago. They just don't have the intestinal fortitude to admit what they have already done. Why not just make it official??? Why not try being brave for once?
