Upcoming Anniversaries - New Doomsdays

Post by oliver_denom »

If the history of doomsday cults and latter-day fervor have taught me anything, then it's that anniversaries really matter.

In the 1800's new millennial sects popped up all over the United States with the expectation that certain mathematical equations created from the bible could give us the date of the second coming. Those of us who remember growing up in the 80's and 90's knew for certain that Jesus would be back by the year 2000, because you know, it's an even number. Here are a few more over the centuries:

These things go in cycles. First they'll claim that Jesus will return X number of years after his birth (2000). When that fails then they'll say it's going to be X number of years after his death (2030 - 33). When that fails, then talk of apocalypse will taper off a bit until the next round numbered year, or another calculation comes along.

Lucky us, we've got to great anniversaries coming up that overlap, so we'll be especially privileged to witness a whole new crop of failed prophets and doomsday preppers. In the year 2030, the church will turn 200 years old. That year will also mark 2000 years since Jesus died, or at least one of the years that's accepted for his death. Yay. More people camping in the dessert and crying as they tell me that my family will be left behind. Sweet Jesus. Can't wait.

 I remember hoping Jesus would come before I had to go to high school chemistry class.

Yay!!! These are going to be so fun!!! Let's start an MLM that sells prep kits for the 2nd coming and then with the money we make we will have a huge NOM vacation party. We'll all fly to Hawaii and rent out a resort and party NOM style. Best doomsday ever!!!!

That's not a bad idea. If any of these companies are publicly traded, then getting in on the ground floor five or ten years before the apocalypse would be gold.

They say that a fool and their money are soon parted. I have no problem helping that process along.

LOL. Love the topic!

The last time I remember something big coming through was on the LDSAVOW website. It was an off-shoot of the Julie Rowe buzz, the works of "Spencer", and there were some other dreamers out there who got into it.

I find the "rumors" so entertaining.

It seems to come and go like every 5 years or something. There is a big swing--at least that's what it feels like for me.

Remember the whole Maya Calendar thing? I think that was one of the big general ones that passed a little while ago. And isn't there something from the bible and a comet or meteor coming that is the end? That seems more recent right now.

Oh wait. There were the 3 guys I saw on the side of the road wearing old clothing,...and they were walking there. I remember one of them holding a sign that said the end was near. Then, when I turned around, they were GONE!...just like THAT!....

It was the 3 Nephites. I KNOW IT!...

If Jesus was born in 6 BCE and lived to be 33 years old, that would put the date of his death on April 09, 27 A.D. At least if we assume that Good Friday and the Crucifixion were the same day.

Maybe Elder Bednar will have a revelation clarifying this date as we get closer to it.
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.
