BYU: Snatching 3rd from 2nd

This is for encouragement, ideas, and support for people going through a faith transition no matter where you hope to end up. This is also the place to laugh, cry, and love together.

BYU: Snatching 3rd from 2nd

Post by moksha »

This is a true story to help illustrate the spunky and indomitable nature of BYU, to stand true to their standards and claim a moral victory in all instances.

The year was 1994 and the BYU team had made it to the finals of the College Bowl Invitational, where colleges competed against one another in displaying their knowledge. This so-called "egghead" tournament was unique because BYU did not slug any opposing player during the course of the competition.

Hard study and sobriety paid off since BYU was about to square off against the eventual champs, the University of Chicago. There was one small glitch. The final showdown was scheduled on a Sunday and BYU could not compete on a Sunday. No one knew for sure whether the BYU students would turn to stone, melt, or go up in a puff of smoke. No one wanted to find out, so BYU entered a forfeit and was replaced by the University of Virginia which in turn was defeated by the brainiacs of the University of Chicago.

Now you know the rest of the story, except for the part about these academic whiz kids emulating their athletic counterparts and claiming a moral victory like every BYU team since the first football game of BYU vs Provo High School. That is the BYU magic.
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

The endless stories of Mormons valiantly not working on Sunday do not help their cause. This is a prime virtue signalling activity and the LDS church enjoys showing off this narrow view of this commandment.

When you get out a little bit, you realize just how weird Mormons are for their strict Sunday observance. Growing up in Utah, it doesn't seem all that unusual. Outside, though, it's pretty weird. Lots of devout believers of other faiths take a much more accommodating approach to Sunday observance. It's only really the groups that are seen as extreme and weird that do. Mormons, Orthodox Jews, JWs, Muslims. Most of those who profess an belief in Jesus, accept his statement, "The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath".

Most of the scout troops in our area are chartered by churches, but I've only heard of one denomination that gets concerned with whether the scouts camp on Sunday.

The policies with scout events on Sunday is really annoying. Many Camporees go from Friday to Saturday and you can always expect the LDS troops to leave by Saturday afternoon.

I knew some Seventh Day Adventists in one of my mission areas. The SDA is really partiular about Saturday being the Sabbath and how it is a mark of the true church. But after the Saturday Sabbath church meeting they would go snowmobiling (this was Canada) or do lots of recereational activities. I don't recall if shopping was allowed, but they definitely were able to call the Sabbath a delight. It was not just scripture reading, home teaching, and family history. I was a bit envious of them as a full time missionary.
