Closing the Little Factory

Post by Just This Guy »

So the church is retiring BKP's infamous "Little Factories" Talk.

LDS Church ‘retires’ Mormon apostle’s ‘little factory’ pamphlet -SL Trib

Okay, by retiring they are stopping printing and sale of the pamphlets and taking the talk off their website, but are keeping it under their conference talks.

It's about time! That erection lasted much longer than four hours.

Wait... I know he's dead and all, and out of respect they probably waited until now to quietly remove it (I mean, assuredly the church brass is embarrassed by that talk), but I wonder why Boyd himself isn't appearing to the 15 bigs and demanding it be left on? If it was important enough to scar the minds and damage the self esteem of youth for all those years, it should be good enough for these boys today shouldn't it? Where's that help from beyond?

(That talk did so much damage to so many boys. Ugh. Good riddance.)
The church has engineered your eternal family into a commodity that can be purchased with an annual fee. The fact that full tithing payment is a requirement for saving ordinances is the biggest red flag imaginable. Hagoth

Sorry, NOM friends, but I can't stop myself from imagining the discussion that went into this (very much needed) decision. I am serious; just picture the agenda item and ensuing discussion. I wonder how much debate went into it? Can you imagine whatever prayers might have been said as they put it before a vote?

Wow. I hope IOT or someone equally as clever does a take on this. The scripting possibilities are hilarious.

I spit out my drink over that comment.

The next obvious question is about the doctrine and policy that this one, lone pamphlet supported. What can a stalwart bishop or parent turn to when they inevitably discover that the Aaronic priesthood is using the "staff of Aaron" in unauthorized ways? There is no scriptural injunction against monkey spanking or chicken choking. LDS culture is far more confused about what the young women could do. There are only the words of living prophets, and the living prophet that wrote this out-of-print talk is now deceased. There is only shame and LDS folk doctrine left over as far as I can tell. I managed to get my son through this gauntlet. I am looking forward to disrupting my ward when they further try to inflict this doctrine on the next generation of young men.

The Little Factory closing mirrors the advanced age of the Brethren. I suppose over time the Little Factories fell behind the building code for wiring and hydraulics, not to mention that their quotas were way behind schedule.

I am assuming the Church wished to avoid the embarrassment this Little Factory talk contained, but the desire to control the sexual expression of young LDS members probably has not abated and will be presented in a less mockable manner with equal invasiveness.
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

Maybe it will be less mockable, but I am wondering what the doctrinal basis will be other than "don't do it, it's gross and it's a sin".

Have they ever denounced SWK's claims that masturbation will make you gay? I also remember a talk that said it will make you insane. As long as those things are still on the books there will be hard-cores digging them up and whacking (no pun intended) kids over the head with them.

My personal favorite was when Vaughn Featherstone said that God would let your child die if you gave them a blessing while guilty of masturbation. And how God keeps a giant scroll with the names of all the masturbators on it that will one day be unrolled for all to see. That terrified me as a kid. I didn't realize that list would have billions of names on it.

While this is certainly a step in the right direction, it will take a generation or two before it fades away. Millions of those pamphlets were printed and all of the current generation of bishops and SPs were raised under its dark cloud. Even though they are no longer in print, just look at all the copies of "Mormon Doctrine" and "The Miracle of Forgiveness" that are and will be sitting on TBMs shelves for decades to come. Again, I'm glad that they're not officially supporting it anymore, but it's going to take a looooong time for that damage to heal.

Featherstone was kind of a weirdo in my humble opinion! He was so arrogant in his talks and so obsessed with sex.

His conference talks were a really big shelf issue for me. For some interesting reading I highly recommend his outlandish talks:

In this one linked below he says that a father should interview his teenage son about masterbation. He also relates a story in which he approves the fat-shaming of an overweight teenage girl. (In the story the girl is told to lose some weight so she would be more attractive to the boys. An odd point to make in an anti-masterbation talk) He also relates a story about a father who raised his son from the dead and makes the point that he wouldn't have been able to do so if he had looked at porn:
I know of a great man who held his dead son in his arms, and said, “In the name of Jesus Christ and by the power and authority of the Holy Melchizedek Priesthood, I command you to live.” And the dead boy opened up his eyes.

This great brother could not have possibly done that had he been looking at a pornographic piece of material a few nights before or if he had been involved in any other transgression of that kind. The priesthood has to have a pure conduit to operate.
I really would like to see the factual support for this story. In my opinion, it sounds like a Paul H.Dunn story....

I am saddened by the closing of the little factory. For years it created such a wonderful product. The little factory was erected many years ago through the strong hands of many men, women, and boys and girls. At its climax, it produced large quantities of life bringing seed every day. It helped assuaged the body of hunger and stress for many people, and became a strong, hard, and mighty pillar of hope and satisfaction for individuals across the world. People from all walks of life would come again and again to visit the little factory if it only would stay open longer. Please do not get choked up for the loss of the little factory. Do not let this change rub you in the wrong way. Rather, let's all raise our hands to a job well done for so many years of service. As we reflect on the challenges faced by the little factory, may God help us hold tightly to the rod of iron to ensure we do not lose grasp of those things most important in our lives the little factory has provided.

He was my mission president. I managed to keep the factory on mothballs for two years, but he was very concerned that one of my companions was going to "approach" me sexually and warned me to keep my guard up.
